We extracted the colours from 10 million of the most “interesting” Creative Commons images on Flickr. Using our visual similarity technology you can navigate the collection by colour.

As you may know, Apple added Flickr uploading to iPhoto ‘09. As you may guess, I was a little perturbed at this since I pay my mortgage by selling, er, a Flickr upload plugin for iPhoto. I acquired my copy of iLife ‘09 yesterday and decided to dive deep on how Apple have implemented Flickr integration in iPhoto ‘09. Here are the results of my investigation. Be aware as you read that this is the result of a morning’s click-around investigation and not months of serious use. I will do my best to give an honest assessment of what is in iPhoto ‘09, and you’ve already read my full disclosure in the previous paragraph.

A free iPhoto export plugin for Flickr. This provides a convenient way to upload your iPhoto descriptions, titles, keywords (tags), and ratings along with your photos. It also supports sets (yay!) and preserves GPS tags and other EXIF data. Flickr is a semi-free photo sharing service/site.

Tags vs Text. Tags are keywords. If your "tags only" results are weak use less words or use "all text" to rummage through titles and descriptions. Tab Me Turn your popups on. Use the "commercial" setting to hunt for commercially usable assets. Seek Original If you want nothing but blue bars change the Seek Original switch to "only." Turn the feature completely off when you intend to wander around flickr™. jUploadr is a cross platform, cross-site Photo uploader. Currently it runs on Windows Linux and OS X and supports both Flickr and Zooomr. It allows you to set all properties of a photo before you upload it. It also supports batch editing, so you can make short work of uploading a bunch of files.

Flickr Set Manager allows you to automatically create new sets on Flickr based on various criteria such as interestingness, date posted and tags, or even from a random set of photographs. Before you can start using it for the first time, you will be taken to the Flickr web site and asked to grant permission for write access - this is so that Set Manager can create new sets in your Flickr account and add photos to them. Don't worry, you can alway revoke this permission at any time by going here.

FlickrViewer is a (hopefully) simple to use enhancement to SimpleViewer that allows SimpleViewer to display a selected flickr photo set. You can see it in action here.

Before sending the images to Flickr, you can modify them with several tools like cropping, sharpening, color correction and much more. Once you've optimized your photo you can specify details about the image and set tags, as you're used to do at Flickr. If you're a Flickr Pro user, you can edit an existing image and replace the current copy with the new version.

Every few minutes we do a search on flickr for new photos tagged "favcol". This is done using the flickr api - a way for other sites to make use of flickr's data. We then analyse each photo to work out the average color, shown as a thick border around the photo

Here you can play with our Visual Search code using two sample databases from flickr. Getting started is easy, search for a tag or click random. Look for an image you like, click one of the Find Similar links under the image.
