Exploring the HTML5 Web Audio: visualizing sound | Smartjava.org

by 2 others (via)
If you've read some of my other articles on this blog you probably know I'm a fan of HTML5. With HTML5 we get all this interesting functionality, directly in the browser, in a way that, eventually, is standard across browsers. One of the new HTML5 APIs that is slowly moving through the standardization process is the Web Audio API. With this API, currently only supported in Chrome and as of October 2013 also in Firefox, we get access to all kinds of interesting audio components you can use to create, modify and visualize sounds (such as the following spectrogram).

BMJ Group blogs: BMJ Web Development Blog » Blog Archive » Lightbeam for Firefox: find out who’s tracking you online

(via)
As the internet continues to evolve, issues surrounding privacy remain a common cause for concern. There is growing anxiety among internet users of how their online activities are tracked for commercial purposes. The business model behind this is generally to aggregate a large number of users in order to sell that audience’s aggregate attention, usually in the form of advertising.  After all, “If you’re not paying for it, you’re not the customer; you’re the product being sold.”

Sex « Quirky Japan Blog

There’s more information about   love hotels in my book, Love Hotels: An Inside Look at Japan’s Sexual Playgrounds. I spent years visiting love hotels around Japan, interviewing love hotel designers, owners and staff, and wading through Japanese books on sex and love hotels to bring you this book.

Make my lemonade

Brand New: It’s a Sports Nation, we are only Living in it

Launched in 2004, SB Nation (short for Sports Blog Nation) is a massive network of more than 300 blogs run by paid sports writers-slash-fans. Combined, SB Nation pulls in 100 million pageviews a month through 20 million unique visitors, 80% of them dudes. While there is a mothership blog that covers sports in general, SB Nation’s real appeal are its local and team blogs, dedicated to the micro concerns of fans in different cities and for specific sports and teams, i.e., there is SB Nation Chicago for all of its citizens but there is also Bleed Cubbie Blue for the MLB’s Cubs, Windy City Gridiron for the NFL’s Bears, and Blog a Bull for the NBA’s Bulls. Over the years, each blog has been given free reign to design its own logo based on its own puny, insider-ey name — the result has been humorous yet mostly crummy, rectangular pieces of artwork. Earlier this month, in preparation for a relaunch of the look and functionality of its blogs, SB Nation introduced new logos for ALL blogs through a unified approach, designed by London-based Fraser Davidson. ALL of them, designed by Fraser Davidson.

Visual Culture Blog: Visual Studies and Visual Communication

The Visual Culture Blog is published by the photographer and researcher in visual culture Marco Bohr. As he reached the finishing line of a theory based PhD on Japanese photography of the 1990s, Marco began the Visual Culture Blog in October 2010 to vent some ideas that didn’t fit into the thesis. Born and raised in Germany, studying photography in Canada, living in Japan, and continuing postgraduate studies in the UK, he hopes to bring an international perspective to the study of visual culture(s). Marco recently completed a Visiting Fellowship at the Australian National University and is on his way to become Lecturer in Visual Communication at Loughborough University.

My Gear Main Page « Vincent Laforet's Blog

The following is a catalogue of the different pieces of gear I have been using in my kit – some for years and some only more recently. I have included the items I currently use and love most, and just like my kit, expect this list to be ever evolving. There will be new additions to the list over time, and I will continue to populate it with examples and behind the scenes footage of the gear in action.

Tough Talk On Emmanuelle Alt, Vogue Paris, Recycled Creativity, & Robo Websites - 2 Anne Enke's Sensuality Blog - AnneofCarversville.com

I may have been the first fashion and style writer to call out big concerns about Emmanuelle Alt’s visionary capacity to lead Vogue Paris, but I’m no longer alone. It’s fine for Alt to lead the magazine in a new direction, but creative, captivating originality and freshness must rule. Carine Roitfeld is a tough act to follow. If she goes into the magazine business as rumoured, let Vogue Paris pray it’s only a semi-annual or quarterly.

Slideshows for your iPad « Flickr Blog

We’re happy to announce some big improvements to the photo light box for iPad users! The light box is a handy, full browser photo viewer available from any photo page. From a photo page on Flickr, simply tap on a photo to view it larger (if available) and on a clean, dark background. Now you’ll be able to quickly swipe between photos, add to your favorites, and share with friends and family gathered around you. So grab your iPad and try looking at your favorite photos, your photostream, or the latest updates from your contacts in the new light box. Enjoy!
