Emoji aren’t sexy. They’re simple, tame, and accessible icons that work wonders if you want convey basic emotions. But when it comes to sexting, they're pretty inadequate. Winky faces, eggplants, and bananas have their uses, of course, but if you want to be a little sexier, you’re going to have to use your words.

Flirtmoji is a visual language designed to empower people of all sexualities to communicate their desires, concerns, and flirtations. We are a group of designers, developers, and hornballs on a mission to give the people playful, inclusive, and functional sex emoji. Launched in 2014 and based in the Bay Area, California, Flirtmoji is going places and we want you to come.

The hamburger icon is a classic. Even if you don't know it by that name, its three black bars are as familiar as your mouse's cursor—a constant companion on your cyber journey since the day you got your first computer. But who designed this icon?

That little three-lined button is the devil. Whether you call it a side menu, navigation drawer, or a hamburger, hiding your features off-screen behind a nondescript icon in the corner is usually a poor mobile design choice. Interaction theory, A/B tests, and the evolution of some of the top apps in the world all support the same thesis: The hamburger button is bad for engagement, and you should probably replace it with a tab bar or other navigation scheme.

I’ve noticed a worrying trend in web navigation lately. More and more websites are hiding their navigation – at desktop resolutions – under a single button, often the 3-bar “hamburger” icon.

In our last post we announced Octicons, our new icon font. We put a lot of work into the font and gained a lot of knowledge in the process. With five different designers working to make it happen, this was one of our bigger collaborations. We thought we'd detail how we built Octicons and what we learned along the way.

Icon fonts are awesome. Other than the fact that they have to be single color, they are superior to using images as icons in every way. But which do you choose? There are loads of different sets out there. I'm going to attempt to round them all up here and keep this updated (this post has already been updated several times).

Earlier this year, Mozilla convened a privacy workshop that brought together some of the world’s leading thinkers in online privacy. People from the FTC to the EFF were there to answer the question: What attributes of privacy policies and terms of service should people care about? I looked everywhere for these icons. Turns out, they were on my machine all along, burried deep inside. I extracted each icon and threw them on a sheet in Illustrator for easy access. Each icon is sized proportionally so when you drag one into Photoshop as a smart object the icon defaults to it's actual size. Every single icon matches a particular key on your keyboard – for example, the lower caps of the basic Latin alphabet form the more popular social icons in a circle, while the representations in capital letters of the same alphabet show them without the circle formation – in their pure form (you can find a detailed tutorial depicted on the last image of the presentaton). Modern Pictograms is a typeface for interface designers and programmers. Designed in early 2011 for the Flatfile Wordpress theme, the pictograms stay sharp when used large or small. Install the OpenType file for Photoshop mockups and drop in the @font-face code into your CSS to embed them right in your Web page. Designed to work on web sites at sizes down to 18 pixels, but best at higher than 24 pixels.
