Even before Google allowed anybody with an Internet connection to see a satellite view of anyplace on the globe, I loved looking at books with aerial photography. A few favorites that focus on natural and human-made landscapes of the United States are Alex S. MacLean's Designs on the Land: Exploring American from the Air, Dolores Hayden's and photographer Jim Wark's A Field Guide to Sprawl and Alan Berger's Drosscape: Wasting Land in Urban America.

Larry’s work brings us into the harsher realities of the world. His first ground-breaking photo book Tulsa flaunted his secret life of drugs, sex and violence in an era where going steady just meant wearing a pin. Leaving nothing to the imagination, Larry’s photos showcased the truth about just how perverse and depraved a life of excess can become. Larry first started making images to “show you what you couldn’t see…” or perhaps, in the case of his first film Kids, were too afraid to see.

Once assembled, this kit -- developed by community researchers from the Public Laboratory for Open Technology and Science -- enables you to collect your own aerial photos from up to 1000 ft. Using the open source MapKnitter web-based software, you can stitch the resulting images into a web-viewable map -- your own "counter-cartography" Google Maps. Use it to tell a different story from the "official" map -- document contamination (it was used to map the BP oil spill) or wetlands loss, or to record a temporary condition like the Occupy Oakland encampment.

The MIT Open Documentary Lab and the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam’s project, “Moments of Innovation,” documents the process of documentation.  The project spans from the 17,000-year-old cave paintings to modern-day virtual reality.

De Françoise Huguier je connaissais essentiellement les photos de mode, de défilés, de backstages, des photos coupées qui vous dévoilaient d’exceptionnels robes, étoffes, jeux de tissus, de lumières … Des photos de mode à la façon de reportages terrain. Cette idée de capturer des moments de mode comme on capturerait des instants de vie est à mettre à la solde de Christian Caujolle, alors directeur du service photo chez Libé, dans les années 80. C’est lui qui envoya missionner Françoise Huguier dans ce monde de «raffinement et barbarie» … Bref l’alchimie des deux : reportage et mode a donné, et ne cesse de donner corps à de Sublimes photos (Titre d’un de ses livres de photos sur la mode).

Face à la caméra, la jeune guatémaltèque fait le récit bouleversant de son initiation et des crimes les plus horribles dont elle a été complice pour le compte de sa "clique". Une mise à nue poignante et sans concession d’une criminelle en quête de rédemption à laquelle Miquel Dewever-Plana, Isabelle Fougère et Ruben Korenfeld, auteurs du documentaire, ont juste ajouté quelques coupures de journaux, photos et dessins qui permettent de mieux situer le contexte de l’enfer vécu par Alma ainsi que par des centaines de jeunes guatémaltèques protagonistes et victimes de l’une de sociétés les plus violentes au monde.

Pour parler des photos de Yoko Takahashi, il faudrait se taire. Mais comme le silence est démodé, contentons-nous de murmurer en contemplant Cinema Table. Et de répandre le bruissement des pages tournées sur des images minimalistes de petits plats qui ont fait des grands films. Le french toast de Kramer contre Kramer, la plâtrée de beans de Brokeback Moutain ou les œufs brouillés de Don’t come knocking. Le tout lié par une lumière blanche presque laiteuse. Ah, il faut qu’on vous chuchote encore un truc : Cinema Table est importé au compte-goutte par Andrea de La Cocotte, et cet exemplaire est le premier à avoir franchi la frontière nippone… Cadeau!
