Build a Solar System

(via)
Make a scale model of the Solar System and learn the REAL definition of "space." Enter how big you want to the sun to be in your model (in inches). Press calculate to see how to scale. Here is an example:If you build your solar system on a roll of toilet paper, you can make the Sun about .4 inches (10 mm) across and still fit the entire solar system on the roll. A standard roll of toilet paper has about 450 sheets that are about 4.375 inches long, hence the roll is about 164 feet long. You should check your toilet paper for length. Some are longer.

Stanford SOLAR Center -- Comparison Activities

This activity helps students understand the enormity of the the sun's size, temperature, and distance by using comparisons. Appropriate for middle school as a whole class tool and to high school students independently.

NASA Sun Earth Media Viewer: Live Solar Images

Another amazing site from NASA. Aside from live images and illustrations, interviews from NASA scientists answer questions related to the Sun in a movie format.

Singing Science Records

Science songs on topics of space, energy &motion, weather, and nature. Right click, choose "save Target As" to download the MP3. Songs are definitely dated, but older students and music teachers may enjoy updating the music style, perhaps to a rap tempo or, be inspired to create their own songs. Good resource for differentiation.

Stop Disasters

Use your critical thinking and problem solving skills to minimize the imapct of various natural disasters such as hurricane, earthquake, tusnami, flood, and wildfire. Geared for middle and high school students with 3 levels of play. Takes 10-20 minutes per game.

It's a Wild Ride - Learning that Works

It's a Wild Ride is an extended interdisciplinary project that studies roller coaster design in science, mathematics, and language arts classrooms. Students learn and apply laws of motion, linear equations, and technical reporting. As the eight week project unfolds they move from learning content-specific knowledge and skills to applying what they learn in a group design task. Ultimately students must convince the theme park to accept their group's design through persuasive presentations. Look at interactive activities under the heading "Internet Activties to Expand Roller Coaster Knowledge"

The pH Factor

(via)
The pH Factor is designed as a resource to help elementary and middle school teachers introduce acids and bases to their students. Materials are organized using a conceptual framework called the Seven E's: Excite, Explore, Explain, Expand, Extend, Exchange, and Examine. This model can be used in a linear fashion or each E can stand alone. Each E contains an intercactive screen and lesson plans. The interactive screens can be used directly in the classrooms, either with individual students or groups. The lesson plans are designed to be read by teachers and modified to fit their specific classroom needs. From the Miami Museum of Science-
