Xen-AoE — xenaoe.org

Xen-AoE is a cluster server architecture which provides more efficient use of cpu, disk, and memory resources than traditional servers while providing zero single points of failure ensuring high availability and greater server maintainability. It does this through the use of server virtualization, utilization of SAN technologies, decoupling of disk from cpu, and taking advantage of commodity hardware such as x86 cpu's and readily available gigabit ethernet infrastructure. Xen-AoE can save your business money by better utilizing hardware resources, simplifying management, and decreasing losses due to downtime.

Use Server Cache Control to Improve Performance - apache web server settings for optimized caching with configuration files

by 3 others
Caching is the temporary storage of frequently accessed data in higher speed media (typically SRAM or RAM) for more efficient retrieval. Web caching stores frequently used objects closer to the client through browser, proxy, or server caches. By storing "fresh" objects closer to your users, you avoid round trips to the origin server, reducing bandwidth consumption, server load, and most importantly, latency. This article shows how to configure your Apache server for more efficient caching to save bandwidth and improve performance. Caching is not just for static sites, even dynamic sites can benefit from caching. Graphics and multimedia typically don't change as frequently as (X)HTML files. Graphics that seldom change like logos, headers, and navigation can be given longer expiration times while resources that change more frequently like XHTML and XML files can be given shorter expiration times. By designing your site with caching in mind, you can target different classes of resources to give them different expiration times with only a few lines of code.

Automating Xen VM deployment with SystemImager - SystemImager

One advantage of server virtualization is the ability to rapidly provision new production environments. Automatic virtual machine deployment can significantly speed up the time to instantiate new services or reallocate resources depending on the user needs. This article focuses on the integration of SystemImager and Xen to create a totally open source framework able to manage on-demand deployment of virtual machines, such as physical machines, using a single centralized point of management. This approach allows to strongly reduce IT costs and simplify administrative tasks for enterprise data centers, even with a complex and/or reduced set of hardware resources, exploiting the dynamic-provisioning functionalities of SystemImager and virtualization advantages of Xen.

Automating deployment and activation of virtual images

Virtualization offers advantages that include server consolidation, isolation, rapid provisioning, and improved change management processes. Since virtualization breaks the hardware dependency and isolates virtual machines from details about the physical servers on which they are hosted, virtual images can be moved from one hosting platform to another. They can also be cloned to create more virtual machines, as desired. One of the challenges with cloning virtual images is handling operating system, network, and application specific customization. This article provides a sample framework for automating virtual image activation on new host platforms. This article, along with a previous article on Using virtual image templates to deploy WebSphere Application Server, demonstrates an automated approach for quickly and easily provisioning new WebSphere Application Server environments. The sample deployment and activation code included with this article is independent of WebSphere Application Server and can be used in conjunction with other software inside a virtual image. The specific example provided here is for WebSphere Application Server V6 in VMware or XEN virtual images, using SUSE V10 as the guest operating system. The activation techniques described in this article can be used in conjunction with IBM Tivoli® Provisioning Manager as described in Using Tivoli Provisioning Manager to deploy composite virtual appliances.

How To Install And Use The djbdns Name Server On Debian Etch | HowtoForge - Linux Howtos and Tutorials

by 1 other
djbdns is a very secure suite of DNS tools that consists out of multiple parts: dnscache, a DNS cache that can be used in /etc/resolv.conf instead of your ISP's name servers and that tries to sort out wrong (malicious) DNS answers; axfrdns, a service that runs on the master DNS server and to which the slaves connect for zone transfers; and tinydns, the actual DNS server, a very secure replacement for BIND.

Lighttpd Control a Directory Listing With mod_dirlisting

Howto: Performance Benchmarks a Web server

by 2 others
You can benchmark Apache, IIS and other web server with apache benchmarking tool called ab. Recently I was asked to performance benchmarks for different web servers. It is true that benchmarking a web server is not an easy task. From how to benchmark a web server, “First, benchmarking a web server is not an easy thing. To benchmark a web server the time it will take to give a page is not important: you don’t care if a user can have his page in 0.1 ms or in 0.05 ms as nobody can have such delays on the Internet.

Apsis Gmbh

by 2 others
The Pound program is a reverse proxy, load balancer and HTTPS front-end for Web server(s). Pound was developed to enable distributing the load among several Web-servers and to allow for a convenient SSL wrapper for those Web servers that do not offer it natively. Pound is distributed under the GPL - no warranty, it's free to use, copy and give away. WHAT POUND IS: 1. a reverse-proxy: it passes requests from client browsers to one or more back-end servers. 2. a load balancer: it will distribute the requests from the client browsers among several back-end servers, while keeping session information. 3. an SSL wrapper: Pound will decrypt HTTPS requests from client browsers and pass them as plain HTTP to the back-end servers. 4. an HTTP/HTTPS sanitizer: Pound will verify requests for correctness and accept only well-formed ones. 5. a fail over-server: should a back-end server fail, Pound will take note of the fact and stop passing requests to it until it recovers. 6. a request redirector: requests may be distributed among servers according to the requested URL. Pound is a very small program, easily audited for security problems. It can run as setuid/setgid and/or in a chroot jail. Pound does not access the hard-disk at all (except for reading the certificate file on start, if required) and should thus pose no security threat to any machine.

(via)
The check_email_delivery plugin allows you to send an email message and then check that it was received. This is also called checking an email loop. This is accomplished through two additional plugins (included), called check_smtp_send and check_imap_receive. As of version 0.5, you can also use other plugins to do create the loop. This project includes: check_smtp_send - connects to an SMTP server and sends a message check_imap_receive - connects to and searches an IMAP account for messages check_email_delivery - sends email and verifies delivery using other plugins You can use check_smtp_send and check_imap_receive independently, and you can use check_email_delivery to check that an email loop is working.

How to install the WiKID Strong Authentication Server - Community Edition | HowtoForge - Linux Howtos and Tutorials

The WiKID Strong Authentication Server is a dual-source two-factor authentication system. PINs are encrypted on a software token and sent to the WiKID server. If the PIN is correct, the encryption valid and the account active, a one-time password is generated, encrypted and returned to the user's token where it is decrypted and presented for use with a network-based services. While there are a number of tutorials on how to combine WiKID's two-factor system a variety of systems (such as SSH, OpenVPN, Apache and SSL-VPNs), this is the first to address how to install the WiKID Server. We assume that you have already configured an RPM-based server. In general, it is best to have WiKID be the only service running on the server. This configuration will minimize potential security risks.
