Genesis Education: Modeling the Periodic Table Interactive Simulation

In the 19th century Dmitri Mendeleev organized the known elements by their characteristics and atomic weights. His creation evolved into what we now call the periodic table. We use it regularly, but what would it be like to construct that model from scratch? What if you had to group elements by their characteristics and place them on a table close to the other elements in their group, while at the same time logically arranging the atomic weights? What decisions would you make? What would it be like... to be Mendeleev?

Planet Impact: Home

In this interactive online activity, students investigate how the gravitational force of a large solar system body, such as Jupiter, can affect the path of a smaller body, such as a comet. They will launch a comet to learn how gravity can change its path. They also learn how changing the speed, the angle of approach, or the masses of large and small bodies affects the force of gravity on a comet. Students are challenged to use this knowledge to crash their own comet into Jupiter or make their comet fly past the planet without colliding with it

Build a Solar System

(via)
Make a scale model of the Solar System and learn the REAL definition of "space." Enter how big you want to the sun to be in your model (in inches). Press calculate to see how to scale. Here is an example:If you build your solar system on a roll of toilet paper, you can make the Sun about .4 inches (10 mm) across and still fit the entire solar system on the roll. A standard roll of toilet paper has about 450 sheets that are about 4.375 inches long, hence the roll is about 164 feet long. You should check your toilet paper for length. Some are longer.

Stanford SOLAR Center -- Comparison Activities

This activity helps students understand the enormity of the the sun's size, temperature, and distance by using comparisons. Appropriate for middle school as a whole class tool and to high school students independently.
