New Jersey Court Backs Rights for Same-Sex Unions - NYT

by ravi
New Jersey’s highest court ruled on Wednesday that gay couples are entitled to the same legal rights and financial benefits as heterosexual couples, but split over whether their unions must be called marriage or could be known by another name, handing that question to the Legislature.

Guardian | Muslims being demonised, says Livingstone

by ravi
"That echoes very much the demonology of Nazi Germany when Hitler said it was the Jews' fault and the problems were brought upon themselves. There is a faint echo of that in a lot of the rubbish we have been seeing in the media recently."

Google-bombing action for Alaa

by sabbah
We think this could be a very popular action because it would give people around the world a chance to do something productive in support of Alaa. Hopefully having the illegal detention of a political prisoner as the first page when the word “Egypt” is searched would be an embarrassment to the Egyptian government (assuming they have enough shame to be embarrassed by such a thing). Secondly, it would raise awareness about Alaa since anyone searching for “Egypt” on Google would learn about his case. Finally, the Google-bombing itself might draw more MSM attention to Alaa’s detention.

Alaa detained for 15 days "pending investigation"

by sabbah
the Egyptian blogsphere is loaded with anger and appeals for urgent actions. All what you need to know to feel the pulse is watching the Egyptian Blogs Aggregator (maintained by Alaa). The story of his arrest is in the headlines across the blogsphere as well as some news websites beyond the Egyptian borders.

Prominent Egyptian blogger arrested and several other activists

Alaa Abd El-Fatah, one of the Egyptian political activists, and one of the first bloggers in Egypt was arrested today together with around ten more activists during a peaceful demonstration in solidarity with sixty activists who were arrested over the past two weeks in a non-violent sit in, as well who were held in custody for two weeks under investigation for “crimes” that if anything would raise only mockery including, humiliating the president, possession of “publishing equipment”(graffiti spray) and blocking traffic.

Pakistani woman, jailed for being raped in Saudi Arabia, deported

by sabbah
It’s difficult for me to talk about what happened to me, from rape to prison and from prison to deportation. I was the victim, I was raped and molested but I was named as the accused, and the man who committed the crime was not touched.

Canadian music industry: forget the levies, bring on DRM heaven

by multilinko (via)
Digital Rights Management, to repeat my argument, is not about stopping piracy, but about shutting down fair use. The aim of shutting down fair use is simple: the copyright owners want to nickel and dime users.
