PUBLIC MARKS with tag qmail

This document is meant to help people get qmail up and running with spamassassin set to tag messages and clam antivirus to kill viruses. Hopefully, it will address the little quirks of setup that occur but are for some reason left out of guides.

To test and benchmark several common SMTP servers for Unix. This is inspired by the work done by Matthias Andree at his Postfix vs. qmail - Performance page. His information, while likely still highly relevant is based heavily around file system I/O and not overall performance of the MTA. Additionally, more MTAs and OSs will eventually be tested here.

This document explains how to install Qmail with the following features: - Greylisting - Adaptive blacklist - SpamAssassin - Simscan - Recipient filtering - Virus scanning (ClamAV) - Administration tool for configuring whitelists, blacklists, relay control, etc...

Qmail-Scanner is an add-on that enables a Qmail email server to scan gatewayed email for certain characteristics (i.e. a content scanner). It is typically used for its anti-virus and anti-spam protection functions, in which case it is used in conjunction with external scanners. It also enables a site (at a server/site level) to create "Policy blocks": i.e. react to email that contains specific strings in particular headers, or particular attachment filenames or types (e.g. *.VBS attachments).

Here is a quick guide to implementing virus protection on an existing Qmail server by adding Postfix, ClamAV and amavisd-new. Readers may ask themselves why anyone would want to do this. There is an actual reason why this particular set up came about.

qpsmtpd is a flexible smtpd daemon written in Perl. Apart from the core SMTP features, all functionality is implemented in small "extension plugins" using the easy to use object oriented plugin API. qpsmtpd was originally written as a drop-in qmail-smtpd replacement, but now it also includes smtp forward, postfix, exim and maildir "backends".

is an unidirectional Mail Filter and Virus Scanner for Qmail. qmvc works in conjunction with the "dot-qmail" mechanism for qmail-local. It is entirely designed for Qmail and there are no additional patches required for Qmail.

To get awstats to work with qmail log files I use this little script from Bob Hutchinson called qlogs4awstats.

The Qmail-Remove utility will remove messages containing a particular string from your Qmail queue.

Greylisting is an interesting method to fight against spam. It's based on the fact most spam is not sent out by fully compliant MTA's. How it works and how this can be implemented into Qmail?

Due to the increase in the number of ISP's blocking port 25 for third party mailservers I decided to setup my mailserver to answer SMTP request on multiple ports. While this can be accomplished in many ways, such as port forwarding or multiple instances of qmail-smtpd, my situation required setting up a second instance or qmail-smtpd.
