The National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Library of Medicine® (NLM) undertook an 18-month project to evaluate, test and recommend digital repository software and systems to support NLM's collection and preservation of a wide variety of digital objects. This article outlines the methodology NLM used to analyze the landscape of repository software and select three systems for in-depth testing. Finally, the article discusses the evaluation results and next steps for NLM. This project followed an earlier NLM working group, which created functional requirements and identified key policy issues for an NLM digital repository to aid in building NLM's collection in the digital environment.

An extensive evaluation of the Fedora Commons 3.0 and DSpace 1.5 digital document repository systems has been conducted. The evaluation aimed at selecting an open source software package that best satisfies the FAO Open Archive and FAO organizational requirements and the requirements for the storage, dissemination and preservation of documents and bibliographic metadata. Both repository systems were evaluated against thirty-two criteria chosen from nine core categories of requirements: community, security, functionality, integration, modularity, metadata, statistics and reports, preservation, and outputs. These criteria were selected with the merger of the FAODOC and FAO Corporate Document Repository (CDR) into the FAO Open Archive in mind.

Over the next six months funding from the planning grant will allow the organizations to jointly specify and design “DuraSpace,” a new web-based service that will allow institutions to easily distribute content to multiple storage providers, both “cloud-based” and institution-based.

The idea behind DuraSpace is to provide a trusted, value-added service layer to augment the capabilities of generic storage providers by making stored digital content more durable, manageable, accessible and sharable.

The Dublin Core Meta Toolkit gives DSpace administrators the ability to convert large amounts of information from their desktop database programs into DSpace compatible Dublin Core meta data. The toolkit provides a number of out-of-the-box database structures to ease data collection as well as enabling users to create custom converters for existing databases.

Guide to using an existing repository

As institutional repositories and digital libraries continue to grow, gain momentum, and acquire content, interest in including audio and video content in these collections is also growing. Yet managing large audio and video files can be challenging, particularly for users wishing to view or access these digital resources. Such files demand more storage and can introduce long wait periods during which files are downloaded to users' computers. Streaming servers can help campuses provide users with much more efficient access to these files, addressing the challenge of managing and using these resources.

It’s a relief to know that I’m not the only one that admires Fedora’s content model and wonders why DSpace should try to reinvent that with it’s “2.0″ vision versus adopting Fedora as a storage and web services layer and benefiting from a shared developer base.

DSpace at INIST-CNRS: one platform, different usages and resulting specific needs/problems

This collection contains a modular DSpace course ready to be taught. Each module consists of a set of slides for a presenter to deliver, and a workbook for the students. There is a mix of modules, some for repository managers, some for technical staff, and some suitable for everyone.
