PUBLIC MARKS with tags art & books

I’ve read a lot of great comics and graphic novels this year and I wanted to share some of my personal favourites. Please add your favourites to the comments so I know what to read next year! These are not in any order - just a bunch of stuff I really enjoyed.

Paper has been used for communication since its invention; either between humans or in an attempt to communicate with the spirit world. I employ this delicate, accessible medium and use irreversible, destructive processes to reflect on the precariousness of the world we inhabit and the fragility of our life, dreams and ambitions. It is the delicacy, the slight feeling of claustrophobia, as if these characters, the landscape have been trapped inside the book all this time and are now suddenly released. A number of the compositions have an urgency about them, the choices made for the cut-out people from the illustrations seem to lean towards people on their way somewhere, about to discover something, or perhaps escaping from something. And the landscapes speak of a bleak mystery, a rising, an awareness of the air.

“Punk is an attitude not an aesthetic” Since 2004 Concrete Hermit has worked with selected artists, building its reputation by producing a range of graphically lead products including books, T-shirts and badges. We decided to create a platform that promoted interesting work fairly and with respect for both the artist and the buyer. We enjoy working with diverse groups of people to produce good, interesting, unusual stuff. We try not to be lead by fashions or markets, although we are making products for consumers - we’re putting creations out there to be consumed. We’re no longer sure what real is but we’ll do our best to keep it real - We are post-neo-old-skool.

Allen's photographs are inspired by his childhood experiences with pop-up books and View-Masters. He begins his process by cutting figures and images out of illustrated pages of old books and vintage fiction novels. Allen then cleverly rearranges and juxtaposes the forms to create three-dimensional scenes. Next, he carefully lights his subjects and photographs the scenes.

Le célèbre grimoire de l'Apothicaire. Couverture à l'ancienne, papier bouffant, encre sépia. Nombreuses illustrations et gravures où Pieter Bruegel et Jérôme Bosch sont à l'honneur. Polices de caractères rares. De la belle ouvrage d'artisan qu'on s'arrache chez les collectionneurs. Un riche travail de pauvre que les industriels à fort tirage ignorent. Un pavé de plus dans la mare du prêt-à-penser culturel et du canigou littéraire. On adore ou on déteste, mais au moins c'est franc du collier. ISBN 2-911344-00-6
