When Google announced in December 2004 that it would digitally scan the books of five major research libraries to make their contents searchable, the promise of a universal library was resurrected. Indeed, the explosive rise of the Web, going from nothing to everything in one decade, has encouraged us to believe in the impossible again. Might the long-heralded great library of all knowledge really be within our grasp?

先日のほったらかし温泉ではGoogle Maps APIを利用して地図を埋め込んだが（現在は埋め込まずに単純にリンクさせています）、友人知人から「どうやるのか簡単に教えて」という要望がいくつか寄せられた。 公式のドキュメンテーション（Google Maps API Documentation）が公開されているが、設置の際に気づいた点も含めて、導入手順とカスタマイズ方法をまとめてみる。

在4月27號（四）的時候由sketchup這家公司宣布被google買下，並且推出二個sketchup版本，一個是sketchup free，一個是sketchup pro 5（普羅五號，聽起來和某提神飲料的名字很像）。 sketchup free的安裝檔大小僅有8m，執行後的介面非常簡單（相較於3D MAX），透過拖拉的方式，可以很簡單的進行模型的建造，重點是官方網站提供非常多的教學內容，還有論壇可以進行討論！（限定pro5版本）

John Musser over at ProgrammableWeb (a great source for info on APIs, I might add!) has posted about the NY Times article* on Google Maps mashups.

Yesterday the Discovery Channel announced a collaboration with Google Earth to show links to some of its videos. The initial set of links are for videos about National Parks. The first place I saw the collection was on the Google Earth download page.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt says that he doesn't understand why people think his company wants to be the next Microsoft. "Everybody thinks we're building operating systems, PCs and browsers. They clearly don't get it," he says. So where does Google want to go? "Look at MySpace," he says cryptically. "Very interesting."

一个叫Google Maps Mania的blog，一年来收集了大约数千个利用Google Maps API的mashup应用。而催生这一热闹景象的，是一对澳大利亚兄弟Lars Eilstrup Rasmussen和Jens Eilstrup Rasmussen。他们的创新，让其他在线地图都纷纷变成了Google Maps的模样。Google Maps的推出，不但显示了Web作为新的应用开发平台的巨大潜能，也证明了自由环境对创新能力的激发。Google Maps赢得了去年的Google创始人奖，Lars Rasmussen也受命组建Google澳洲研发中心。

A new report from iResearch finds that Baidu and Google combined have a 90 percent market share of the Chinese search space. Baidu gets a 56.6 percent slice, followed by Google at 32.8 percent. Others are at less than five percent. China View has more details here: Baidu ranks No. 1 in China's on-line searching market. I don't see the report at iResearch yet, but you can watch for it here. China View doesn't say what time period the figures are for, but China Knowledge says they're for 2005. If so, that makes them different and slightly higher than 2005 year end figures iResearch recently released here.

Note in the the second graphics 70% of google products are Search and Ads, Google is trying also to make their services varied to attract the more possible users around their main products. The goal in 2006 to be lead in search, of course there is no doubt that Google is already a leader but they have to keep this position.
