How To Save Traffic With Lighttpd's mod_compress (Debian Squeeze) | HowtoForge - Linux Howtos and Tutorials

(via)
In this tutorial I will describe how to configure mod_compress on a Lighttpd web server (on Debian Squeeze). mod_compress allows Lighttpd to compress files and deliver them to clients (e.g. browsers) that can handle compressed content which most modern browsers do. With mod_compress, you can compress HTML, CSS, Javascript, text or XML files to approx. 20 - 30% of their original sizes, thus saving you server traffic and making your modem users happier.

Paravirtualization With Xen 4.0 On Debian Squeeze (AMD64) | HowtoForge - Linux Howtos and Tutorials

(via)
This tutorial provides step-by-step instructions on how to install Xen 4.0 on a Debian Squeeze (6.0) system (AMD64) and create paravirtualized guests. Xen lets you create guest operating systems (*nix operating systems like Linux and FreeBSD), so called "virtual machines" or domUs, under a host operating system (dom0). Using Xen you can separate your applications into different virtual machines that are totally independent from each other (e.g. a virtual machine for a mail server, a virtual machine for a high-traffic web site, another virtual machine that serves your customers' web sites, a virtual machine for DNS, etc.), but still use the same hardware. This saves money, and what is even more important, it's more secure. If the virtual machine of your DNS server gets hacked, it has no effect on your other virtual machines. Plus, you can move virtual machines from one Xen server to the next one.

(via)
This tutorial shows how you can enable Compiz Fusion on a Debian Squeeze desktop (the system must have a 3D-capable graphics card - I'm using an Nvidia GeForce 8200 here). With Compiz Fusion you can use beautiful 3D effects like wobbly windows or a desktop cube on your desktop.

Installing ASSP (Anti-Spam SMTP Proxy) On Ubuntu Server 10.04 / Debian 5.0 | HowtoForge - Linux Howtos and Tutorials

(via)
This How-To document guides you through installing ASSP (Anti-Spam SMTP Proxy) on an Ubuntu 10.04 (LTS) Server or Debian 5.0 in the simplest way possible. It *may* work on later versions but I have no way of knowing how these instructions will work for you. Installing Ubuntu/Debian is beyond the scope of this document and it is assumed you already have the core Ubuntu/Debian OS with no predefined software collections installed.

Virtualization With KVM On A Debian Squeeze Server | HowtoForge - Linux Howtos and Tutorials

(via)
This guide explains how you can install and use KVM for creating and running virtual machines on a Debian Squeeze server. I will show how to create image-based virtual machines and also virtual machines that use a logical volume (LVM). KVM is short for Kernel-based Virtual Machine and makes use of hardware virtualization, i.e., you need a CPU that supports hardware virtualization, e.g. Intel VT or AMD-V.

Make Browsers Cache Static Files With mod_expires On Apache2 (Debian Squeeze) | HowtoForge - Linux Howtos and Tutorials

(via)
This tutorial explains how you can configure Apache2 to set the Expires HTTP header and the max-age directive of the Cache-Control HTTP header of static files (such as images, CSS and Javascript files) to a date in the future so that these files will be cached by your visitors' browsers. This saves bandwidth and makes your web site appear faster (if a user visits your site for a second time, static files will be fetched from the browser cache). This tutorial was written for Debian Squeeze.

Setting Up An Android App Build Environment With Eclipse, Android SDK, PhoneGap (Debian Squeeze) | HowtoForge - Linux Howtos and Tutorials

(via)
This tutorial describes how you can set up an development environment for building Android apps on a Debian Squeeze desktop using Eclipse, the Android SDK, and PhoneGap. I will describe how to build Android apps from the command line with PhoneGap and from the GUI with Eclipse and PhoneGap and how to test them in an Android emulator and on a real Android device. PhoneGap allows you to develop your Android applications using web technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript (e.g. with JavaScript libraries such as jQuery/jQTouch), and it will turn these web apps into native Android apps (in fact, PhoneGap supports multiple platforms such as Android, iPhone, Palm, Windows Mobile, Symbian, so you can use the same sources to create apps for multiple platforms).

Virtual Users And Domains With Postfix, Courier, MySQL And SquirrelMail (Debian Squeeze) | HowtoForge - Linux Howtos and Tutorials

(via)
This document describes how to install a Postfix mail server that is based on virtual users and domains, i.e. users and domains that are in a MySQL database. I'll also demonstrate the installation and configuration of Courier (Courier-POP3, Courier-IMAP), so that Courier can authenticate against the same MySQL database Postfix uses. The resulting Postfix server is capable of SMTP-AUTH and TLS and quota. Passwords are stored in encrypted form in the database. In addition to that, this tutorial covers the installation of Amavisd, SpamAssassin and ClamAV so that emails will be scanned for spam and viruses. I will also show how to install SquirrelMail as a webmail interface so that users can read and send emails and change their passwords.

Installing And Using OpenVZ On Debian Squeeze (AMD64) | HowtoForge - Linux Howtos and Tutorials

(via)
In this HowTo I will describe how to prepare a Debian Squeeze server for OpenVZ. With OpenVZ you can create multiple Virtual Private Servers (VPS) on the same hardware, similar to Xen and the Linux Vserver project. OpenVZ is the open-source branch of Virtuozzo, a commercial virtualization solution used by many providers that offer virtual servers. The OpenVZ kernel patch is licensed under the GPL license, and the user-level tools are under the QPL license.

The Perfect Desktop - Debian Squeeze | HowtoForge - Linux Howtos and Tutorials

(via)
This tutorial shows how you can set up a Debian Squeeze desktop that is a full-fledged replacement for a Windows desktop, i.e. that has all the software that people need to do the things they do on their Windows desktops. The advantages are clear: you get a secure system without DRM restrictions that works even on old hardware, and the best thing is: all software comes free of charge.

Upgrade Debian Lenny To Squeeze In A Few Simple Steps | HowtoForge - Linux Howtos and Tutorials

(via)
One rather old laptop and one server were the test objects for this howto. Both systems do not have any RAID devices and use a simple partition scheme from a default basic Lenny install. If your setup deviates much from this, it's highly recommended to read all details of the Debian Release Notes before you continue. Be warned. All commands are run as root and Debian recommends to use apt-get for the Squeeze upgrade process.

Installing MyDNS-NG & MyDNSConfig On Debian Squeeze | HowtoForge - Linux Howtos and Tutorials

(via)
This tutorial will describe how to install and configure MyDNS-NG and MyDNSConfig 3 on Debian Squeeze. MyDNS-NG is a DNS server that uses a MySQL database as backend instead of configuration files. The advantage is that MyDNS simply reads the records from the database, and it does not have to be restarted/reloaded when DNS records change or zones are created/edited/deleted. A secondary nameserver can be easily set up by installing a second instance of MyDNS that accesses the same database or, to be more redundant, uses the MySQL master / slave replication features to replicate the data to the secondary nameserver.

(via)
This tutorial describes the installation of an ISPConfig 3 multiserver setup with dedicated web, email, database and two DNS servers all managed trough a single ISPConfig 3 control panel. The setup described below uses five servers and can be extended easily to to a higher number of servers by just adding more servers. E.g. if you want to have two mailservers, do the setup steps from chapter 2 on both of these servers. If you want to set up more web servers, then install ISPConfig on all other web servers in expert mode except of the first one.
