最早的emoticon是Smiley，在1982年9月18日由Carnegie Mellon University研究員Scott E. Fahlman(現為該校Research Professor)在 Computer Science community bbs(General板)上提出的(他的homepage有說這件事: Smiley Lore)。當時他提出的只有「:-)」和「:-(」，用來給人開玩笑用:
