Wade MacLauchlan's "Welcome" to UPEI Page

He says: "At UPEI you will find the highest-quality people and programs. And a calibre of student and university life that is second to none. We are proud of UPEI's hallmark as a student-centred university. Students are at the heart of everything we do."

Wade MacLauchlan also claims that "UPEI professors have won the national 3M Fellowship for Teaching Excellence in 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2005, a record of achievement unmatched by any university in Canada.” http://welcome.upei.ca/html/parents_welcome.html Oh, really? Let’s look at the facts: As of 2007, a total of 218 (yes, two hundred and eighteen) 3M Teaching Fellowships had been awarded in Canada. (Actually, these awards are made only in Canada; they are funded by the Scotch Tape manufacturer.) As many as ten 3M fellowships are awarded each year. According to the chart at http://tinyurl.com/3at6su OR http://www.uofaweb.ualberta.ca/strategic/nav03.cfm?nav03=17314&nav02=17141&nav01=17120, the University of Alberta has won the most 3M awards (28). Since 1989, eight faculty members at Brock University have won the 3M award; six of these Brock faculty members won the awards in a seven-year span (2000 - 2006). Four faculty members at the University of Prince Edward Island won 3M awards in a five-year span (2001 – 2005). So if these awards really do indicate teaching excellence (as President MacLauchlan claims), it seems evident that at least two universities in Canada outperform UPEI.
