Microsoft, par la voix de Marc Gardette, responsable stratégie chez l’éditeur, a souhaité répondre aux arguments d’IBM et de la communauté Open-Source contre OpenXML présentés dans « l’auréole et le marteau» (Le Monde Informatique n°1155, du 27 avril 2007, page 42).

L'éditeur propose un "plug-in" open source permettant d'ouvrir et de sauvegarder avec Office 2007 des fichiers au format OpenDocument. Un projet similaire est en cours de développement pour Excel et PowerPoint.

The Ecma International Technical Committee (TC45) is working to establish a standard for Office Open XML File Formats.
