Yahoo、Google、Microsoft陸續進軍智慧型地圖，期望語意式廣告（contextual advertisements）結合標出商家地點的地圖，帶動網際網路邁向新紀元，到時Google等希望可以脫穎而出，成為業界的佼佼者。用戶只要進行搜尋，這類語意式廣告就可崁入地圖裡或和地圖並陳。 雖然三家公司尚未公佈將來要如何靠智慧型地圖獲利，不過可能的模式之一是將程式開發工具授權出去後，利用智慧型地圖達到廣告目的的商家將與提供智慧型地圖的公司拆帳。 搜尋引擎廣告公司Fathom Online的執行長Chris Churchill說：「這塊市場潛藏數十億美元的商機。智慧型地圖採支援廣告的方式，是許多人的心血結晶。」

This is our first drop of what we hope to be a monthly release cycle for the publication of patterns. In many cases we have bundled the patterns with pointers to related code from the Yahoo! User Interface Code Library. We hope this is a useful resource and look forward to your feedback.

The Yahoo! User Interface Library is a set of utilities and controls, written in JavaScript, for building richly interactive web applications using techniques such as DOM scripting, HTML and AJAX. The UI Library Utilities facilitate the implementation of rich client-side features by enhancing and normalizing the developer's interface to important elements of the browser infrastructure (such as events, in-page HTTP requests and the DOM). The Yahoo UI Library Controls produce visual, interactive user interface elements on the page with just a few lines of code and an included CSS file. All the components in the Yahoo! User Interface Library have been released as open source under a BSD license and are free for all uses.

It isn’t entirely fair to compare the new Yahoo Photos with all of the early stage companies showing their stuff at Demo. But its a very impressive product and it’s good that they came here to demo it. The new Yahoo Photos will be launching this spring. Everyone knows that Yahoo owns Flickr, the wildly popular photo tagging and sharing service that they bought in late 2004. But what most people don’t know (I didn’t) is that around 30 million unique monthly visitors come to Yahoo Photos (the other Yahoo photo service) v. about 8 million on Flickr.. Flickr has mind share; Yahoo Photos is driving real (unique) traffic.

So what do you make of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES)? Despite the best efforts of the VOIP contingent (Skype, Vonage, et al), the overall them - sadly, from the outside looking in at least for this year - is the intent to migrate the Web from personal computers to other access "points" such as wireless devices, cars and TVs. In this keynote speech yesterday, Yahoo CEO Terry Semel officially unveiled Yahoo Go, which will offer access to many of the company's services on cell phones and TVs. Google and Yahoo both announced deals with Motorola to offer wireless search.

At a Friday morning keynote address at the CES show that included appearances from Ellen deGeneres, Tom Cruise and Intel CEO Paul Otellini, Yahoo! chairman and CEO Terry Semel unveiled a set of new Web services initiatives dubbed Yahoo! Go. The services are designed to let users interact with Yahoo! and their own content stored online from mobile phones, PC desktops, and other sources.
