Rationale Netbooks appear to be growing in popularity. An install image optimized for this form factor would be great for users and may have some commercial potential. KDE 4 is designed to be scalable and is easily adjusted to new form factors. It may be particularly useful to have in the *buntu stable in cases where a quick turn around for a particular device type is needed. User stories Jane has used Kubuntu for years and wants it on her new netbook. She is pleased to find Kubuntu Netbook Edition gives her a familiar environment scaled to her new device. Klaus has a new netbook device coming to market with an exciting new form factor. He needs an OS for it, but needs it soon. With a little help, he's able to ship on time and on budget with Kubuntu Netbook Edition. Assumptions None. The settings changes have been prototyped and the plasma-netbook shell will only be included if it is mature. Design Test various settings such and font and panel sizes in the netbook form factor to determine good settings for smaller systems. Test and integrate plasma-netbook shell if ready. Implementation Implementation will have three major parts Settings Changes A new Kubuntu default settings netbook package will be needed along with a netbook metapackage for this edition (in Universe for Karmic) New Flavour Setup A kubuntu netbook seed will need to be created. Image builds for i386 will be needed. Plasma Netbook Shell If it is ready, the plasma Netbook shell will be packaged and used as the default front end for Kubuntu Netbook Edition. Kubuntu Netbook Edition Kubuntu Netbook Edition is a new Kubuntu flavour optimised for netbook computers. These computers generally have screens smaller then 10 inches, less processing power, no CD/DVD drive and less memory & disk space than traditional laptops. Kubuntu Netbook Edition was first released with Kubuntu 9.10 and is a technology preview.

Learn and Discover with the KDE Educational applications Desktop Planetarium, KStars, provides an accurate graphical simulation of the night sky, from any location on Earth, at any date and time. It can control telescopes and has many tools for the amateur or professional astronomer. This new version now shows millions of stars, can predict conjunctions and has a Sky Calendar. If you start it for the first time, a welcome wizard will show. After choosing your location, you can click the "Download Extra Data..." to select additional star and image data to install. Millions of stars are available in the packages, as well as inline thumbnail images which show images of objects right on the sky. There are several interesting educational applications of this program as well. Pushing "CTRL-F" will bring up the find dialog. Type a name of a heavenly object to find it, like the moon. You might want to turn off "Toggle opaque ground" (most right button on the toolbar) to see the object if it is below the horizon. If you now choose "Equatorial coordinates" by hitting the space bar and set the time per second in the toolbar to 1 hour, watch. The moon moves - but, seen from the equitorial, not in a horizontal line! Why is that? The reason is that the earth spins, but not entirely as you might expect: there is a tilt and a wobble to the spin of the earth, and thus the observer moves up and down... Making science visible to children in such a way is a strong tool in the classroom, and this is a truly educational application. And it is not just for children, so be sure to have a look at this application if you are interested in astronomy!

Educational Applications and Games Overview The KDE development platform contains common UI widgets, but also libraries for interaction with hardware, multimedia, configuration and network transparency, among others. Some changes affect most or all the KDE applications. The most notable of these improvements include: The 'file open' and 'file save' dialogs have been touched up. Using the same infrastructure as Dolphin, they now also include a zoom slider and can show file previews. Sharing such user interface elements ensures a smooth and consistent user experience.

The file manager, Dolphin, has seen several changes that affect your work flow and make file management more efficient. Folders and tabs can open automatically when you drag a file over them, making it easier to organize your files. You can also navigate with the Breadcrumb bar. And if you want, you can have that Breadcrumb bar always display the full path. To configure this, go to the "Dolphin Preferences" in the Settings menu and put a tick in front of the "Show full path inside location bar". You can enter a custom location in the Breadcrumb bar by clicking on the right of it, and selecting "edit". Revert it to its former state by clicking the yellow icon on the far right. Like with all text input fields in KDE, you can select a line of text and middle click in the field to add the selected text at that position. If you middle-click-paste text onto the "Clear text" icon (left facing black arrow) on the right, the current location will be replaced.

O ubuntu eu não sei, mas o Kubuntu 8.10 tá horrível, principalmente por causa do KDE 4.1, que simplesmente não dá prá utilizar. Vai ser difícil minha esposa se acostumar com ele, porque foram retiradas quase todas as opções de que ela gostava.

Essa dica é uma daquelas coisas loucas que pensamos nunca acontecer no Linux. Recentemente (há um mês e meio) instalei o KUbuntu com KDE4 em meu computador. Confirmei o que todos dizem sobre o KDE 4: muito bonito, muito legal, porém pesado e com vários bugs. Mas acabei gostando e fiquei com ele. Embora tenha remediado muitos dos problemas que o KDE 4 ainda traz, um deles ficou incomodando: ele pára inexplicavelmente, como se estivesse tudo travado. E isso sem motivo. Às vezes, mesmo quando estou com um único aplicativo aberto ele trava. Perguntei para outros usuários, e acontecia a mesma coisa. Não descobri exatamente como "consertar" esse problema, mas encontrei um atalho que interrompe o travamento quase que instantaneamente. Use a combinação de teclas abaixo: CTRL ALT DEL Sei que é terrível, parece coisa do Windows, mas funciona praticamente sem deixar seqüelas. Após o uso das famosas teclas ditas acima, o KDE 4 exibe as opções costumeiras (Desligar, Reiniciar etc). Daí é só clicar em "Cancelar" e voltar ao trabalho.
