Symbolsets are semantic symbol fonts. They work in modern browsers and anywhere OpenType features are supported.

Droid Naskh is an Arabic type designed in 2010 for use in Google™ products such as Google Chrome™ and Android™. Designed to complement the Latin, Greek and Cyrillic provided in the Droid Serif family, the Arabic matches the color, alignment and design detail of the Droid Serif allowing them to be used together for multi-lingual typesetting. This Naskh style is optimized for reading Arabic script on screen. Droid Naskh was designed in collaboration with Ascendercorp and Google to ensure that all the requirements for a screen and web font are met. Google performed several surveys and tests on the fonts during the design and development process.

Arabic graphic design and typography

Intro family includes 26 very unique font styles & weights. The font family is characterized by excellent legibility in both – web & print design areas, well-finished geometric designs, optimized kerning etc. Intro is most suitable for headlines of all sizes, as well as for text blocks that come in both maximum and minimum variations. The font styles are applicable for any type of graphic design – web, print, motion graphics, etc. and perfect for t-shirts and other items like posters and logos.

In Bologna, in 1839, the decorative artist Antonio Basoli published his Alfabeto Pittorico, ossia raccolta di pensieri pittorici composti di oggetti comincianti dalle singole lettere alfabetiche (‘Pictorial Alphabet, or, a collection of pictorial thoughts composed of objects beginning with the individual letters of the alphabet’). This was an album of twenty-five elaborate lithographs, each one featuring an alphabetical character cast in some fantastic architectural form, in a setting contrived to illustrate any number of figures and objects for which there were Italian words beginning with that same letter.

Any application of typography can be divided into two arenas: micro and macro. Understanding the difference between the two is especially useful when crafting a reading experience, because it allows the designer to know when to focus on legibility and when to focus on readability.

CSS3 has some new values for sizing things relative to the current viewport size: vw, vh, and vmin. It is relevant to bring up now, because it's shipping in Chrome 20 (canary at the time of this writing). And not behind a flag, it just works. Production usage isn't quite there, but it will be soon enough.

On Sunday 28 October I attended Shanghai Barcamp 9, organised by TechYizu. It was great to catch up with everyone in the local tech scene. Barcamps are "unconferences", meaning anyone can show up without registering, and give a talk on a geeky topic of their choice. Here's my talk from the event, on love hotels and Unicode.

Every single icon matches a particular key on your keyboard – for example, the lower caps of the basic Latin alphabet form the more popular social icons in a circle, while the representations in capital letters of the same alphabet show them without the circle formation – in their pure form (you can find a detailed tutorial depicted on the last image of the presentaton). The social icons font is very convenient and easy to use for web design in themes, page layouts etc, as well as for every type of print or offline design. Have fun!

Modern Pictograms is a typeface for interface designers and programmers. Designed in early 2011 for the Flatfile Wordpress theme, the pictograms stay sharp when used large or small. Install the OpenType file for Photoshop mockups and drop in the @font-face code into your CSS to embed them right in your Web page. Designed to work on web sites at sizes down to 18 pixels, but best at higher than 24 pixels.

We were asked to summarise everything that’s good about a new web typography application, on a tshirt. Here’s what we did.

swissted is an ongoing project by graphic designer mike joyce, owner of stereotype design in new york city. drawing from his love of punk rock and swiss modernism, two movements that have absolutely nothing to do with one another, mike has redesigned vintage punk, hardcore, and indie rock show flyers into international typographic style posters. each poster is sized to the standard swiss kiosk dimensions of 35.5 inches wide by 50 inches high and set in berthold akzidenz grotesk medium, all lowercase. every single one of these shows actually happened.
