Improving OpenStreetMap with probe data | Mapbox

We’re building a new data processing pipeline for analyzing GPS probe data streams. This infrastructure will let us improve the map in new ways and at huge scale. Here’s the first look at how it works. Streaming GPS tracks are overlaid against our streets data, allowing us to identify where there is activity, like people running or driving, but no trail or road data in our map. When we find a place like this, we queue it up for our data team to look at in to-fix, our open source micro-tasking tool. Once we verify that a path or street is missing, we add it to OpenStreetMap and our map is updated in under 10 minutes.

Everyone knows that Paris’s visitor-friendly arrondissements are flooded with selfie sticks on weekends. Now, a new visualization of more than a decade of Flickr photographs shows exactly what paths photographers make when taking pictures.

What They Know - WSJ

Marketers are spying on Internet users -- observing and remembering people's clicks, and building and selling detailed dossiers of their activities and interests. The Wall Street Journal's What They Know series documents the new, cutting-edge uses of this Internet-tracking technology. The Journal analyzed the tracking files installed on people's computers by the 50 most popular U.S. websites, plus The Journal also built an "exposure index" -- to determine the degree to which each site exposes visitors to monitoring -- by studying the tracking technologies they install and the privacy policies that guide their use.

Cars, Trikes, and More – Street View – Google Maps

When we first started Street View as an experimental project, we packed several computers into the back of an SUV, stuck cameras, lasers, and a GPS device on top, and drove around collecting our first imagery. Since Street View launched for five U.S. cities in May 2007, we've expanded our 360-degree panoramic views to include locations on all seven continents. We then moved to a van for a brief period, before switching to a fleet of cars that would allow us to scale the project throughout the US and around the world. We went from a rack of computers to one small computer per car, and then set to work refining our camera system to capture higher-resolution panoramic views. After several iterations of the car and camera technology, the latest car has 15 lenses taking 360 degrees of photos. It also has motion sensors to track its position, a hard drive to store data, a small computer running the system, and lasers to capture 3D data to determine distances within the Street View imagery.

Street View and Beyond: Google’s Influence on Photography - LightBox

When Google Street View started as an experiment in 2007, the company sent SUVs equipped with cameras, GPS and lasers to collect its first pictures. The idea of capturing images of the entire world from the perspective of the street was revolutionary, if not a little insane. Now, five years later, Google has recorded 360-degree photographs of streets in more than 3,000 cities in 43 countries around the world. Google Street View cars—along with snowmobiles and giant tricycles–have covered more than five million unique miles of road since the project began, making tens of millions of still images in even the most far off places on the map, such as Antarctica.

This is the best thing ever. It’s how I feel after a ride in a New York City cab, the Batman ride at Great America, or a really great Saturday night in Chicago. TYPOE is the artist behind this and has a current exhibit at Art Basel Miami.

KN | Kitsune Noir » ‘Exit Through The Gift Shop’ – A Banksy Film

In a slightly random turn of events Banksy will be releasing a new film called Exit Through The Gift Shop that will be premiering at Sundance this Sunday. The film supposedly is about a man who tried to make a movie about Banksy, but Banksy ends up making a film about him instead. From viewing the trailer it just looks like him and Shep Fairey running around Silver Lake and Melrose bombing buildings. I’m curious to hear what it’s really about, I’m sure it’ll be interesting no matter what it is.
