The title of the work (Land of The Free) refers to the American Anthem, and makes reference to Archibald MacLeish's 1938 book of FSA photographs. It also refers to a degree of irony when talking about personal 'freedoms' when one would choose to 'copy' the look of cowboys, sci-fi characters and pop stars. I want the viewer to see the relation to ideology; here are the effects of American mass-culture; consumed and re-enacted by British people in my photographs.

99 Vector Portraits Andrew Bush

Masaru Goto : "NIHON-JIN, BURAKU-MIN: Portraits of Japan's outcast people"

The Buraku-Min (tribal people) compose one of the main minority groups in Japan, along with the Ainu of Hokkaido and the Ryukyuans of Okinawa. Despite being thoroughly Japanese, racially and ethnically, the Buraku-Min still face discrimination and struggle under the weight of their shared history in Japan.

VII VISIONAIRES

VII derives its name from the number of founding photo-journalists who, in September 2001, formed this collectively owned agency.

News Reporting Pictures : I follow three rules while reporting on news events : Honesty - Respect - Neutrality. Honesty is of course the basis. No lies, no fakes, only the truth. Respect toward my subjects is fundamental. But this respect is also directed toward the people I work for and the viewers of my pictures. Neutrality is my way of approaching things. It has been for a long while. I don't care what my personnal feelings or conviction are about the subject I shoot. As a witness, I have to keep that for myself as much as possible. "Art" pictures : Taking pictures, in my way of doing it, is about telling stories. Stories can be perfect, clean, glamourous, desirable, but are often dirty, nasty, ugly, sad, and unperfect. One way or the other, visual and story must work together to make a great picture. If you're looking for a photographer in Paris and think my style is what you're looking for, do not hesitate and drop me a line : philippe.leroyer [at] gmail.com

Montreal Photo - PhotoBlog of Julien Roumagnac : Frozen Dow

L'Oeil Ouvert | Florence Delahaye

The Ones We Love

The Ones We Love is a project highlighting young and talented photographers from around the world. Each artist contributed six photographs of the person(s) who is most important to them, taken outdoors in a natural setting. The goal of the website is to portray the people who are loved, cherished, and inspirational to these artists, and also showcase the differences and similarities in the photographs each of them took within the same guidelines.

You see amazing things every day. It could be out the window of the train on your way to work, it could be in your back yard, even better it could be somewhere completely foreign, something you didnt know existed. My aim is to give that feeling of newness with each shot I take. My method is to take what was once large and shrink it down to model size. To take the familiar and get you thinking even if for a second "wait a minute, is that..."

Derek Powazek - A Savvy Approach to Copyright Messaging

(via)
I’m a photographer. I’m also a web geek. And those two sides of my brain sometimes fight with each other. As a photographer, I’m outraged when people grab photos off the web and use them without consideration of copyright. I’ve been fighting this “It’s on the internet, so it must be free!” ignorance for more than a decade.
