The AI Report - Forbes.com

Can machines think? In 1950, Alan Turing, considered by some to be the father of modern computing, published a paper in which he proposed that, "If, during text-based conversation, a machine is indistinguishable from a human, then it could be said to be 'thinking' and, therefore, could be attributed with intelligence." He predicted that a computer would pass this "Turing Test" by the end of the century. That hasn't happened--yet. But the question continues to provoke and inspire. AI might be just around the corner, or it might be centuries away.

xml.lt: Blog: Query interfaces for the Semantic Web

An interesting presentiation at Google Tech Talks about different interfaces to query semantic data. Casual users were presented with 4 increasingly formal systems: keyword search, natural language search, controlled language search, and a graphical interface to build query patterns. Interestingly enough, the users liked natural language best, although keyword queries gave more accurate results.

pyector - Google Code

ECTOR is a learning chatterbot. pyECTOR is its python version.

Virtual evil - Boing Boing

(via)
What does it mean to be truly evil? Cognitive scientist Selmer Bringsjord is developing a virtual human that embodies their evolving definition of "evil." In development for several years, the character, named "E," is designed to interact with humans in a way that sounds similar to a chatbot, albeit a really demented chatbot. Bringsjord is even considering the ethics and "danger" of making an evil software program.

Heaton Research

Welcome to Heaton Research, Inc. We are a technical book publishing company specializing in topics such as neural networks, bots, and computer hardware. All of our books have between 50-75% of their content posted online here. Additionally we also offer numerous articles on many of the same topics as our books.

Sutton & Barto Book: Reinforcement Learning: An Introduction

This introductory textbook on reinforcement learning is targeted toward engineers and scientists in artificial intelligence, operations research, neural networks, and control systems, and we hope it will also be of interest to psychologists and neuroscientists.

Game/AI: Fixing Pathfinding Once and For All

I need to talk about some problems we face with pathfinding. In order to prove that these problems still exist, I felt the need to make this video ... which will hopefully be taken in the humorous and lighthearted spirit in which it was intended

C'est moi Nao, le petit robot - 20minutes.fr

(via)

Linux.com | AI versus AI: N.E.R.O. on Linux

If you've ever been frustrated with the artificial intelligence (AI) in video games, then you are a prime candidate for Neuro-Evolving Robotic Operatives (N.E.R.O.), a cross-platform combat game where the key to winning is training your own intelligent non-player characters. On the field of play, the only rule is "let the best AI win." I tested my skills with the Linux client, and found N.E.R.O. to be a very different sort of game.

Wired News: AI Reaches the Golden Years

(via)
Artificial intelligence is 50 years old this summer, and while computers can beat the world's best chess players, we still can't get them to think like a 4-year-old. This week in Boston, some of the field's leading practitioners are gathering to examine this most ambitious of computer research fields, which at once has managed to exceed, and fall short of, our grandest expectations.

Chatterbots, Tinymuds, and the Turing Test

(via)
This paper describes the development of one such Turing System, including the technical design of the program and its performance on the first three Loebner Prize competitions. We also discuss the program's four year development effort, which has depended heavily on constant interaction with people on the Internet via Tinymuds (multiuser network communication servers that are a cross between role-playing games and computer forums like CompuServe). Finally, we discuss the design of the Loebner competition itself, and address its usefulness in furthering the development of Artificial Intelligence.
