In November 2005 I presented on pro.html.it a three-part article on creating CSS layouts using techniques like negative margins, any order columns and in some case opposite floats. The main goal of the article was getting the maximum number of layouts based on the same markup, each with valid CSS and HTML, without hacks nor workaround and a good cross-browser compatibility. Il existe plusieurs alternatives à ce type d'outil mais là on a le choix ! Par exemple pour le langage HTML on a la doc de htmlhelp.com, MSDN ou le W3C. C'est bien pensé !

The Yahoo! User Interface Library is a set of utilities and controls, written in JavaScript, for building richly interactive web applications using techniques such as DOM scripting, HTML and AJAX. The UI Library Utilities facilitate the implementation of rich client-side features by enhancing and normalizing the developer's interface to important elements of the browser infrastructure (such as events, in-page HTTP requests and the DOM). The Yahoo UI Library Controls produce visual, interactive user interface elements on the page with just a few lines of code and an included CSS file. All the components in the Yahoo! User Interface Library have been released as open source under a BSD license and are free for all uses.

Les commentaires conditionnels sont de plus en plus souvent utilisés comme substituts aux hacks CSS afin de gérer les défauts d'implémentation CSS d'IE 5.x et 6.0 Windows. Leur usage est également préconisé par Microsoft en prévision des changements apportés par IE7. Voici un rappel des différentes possibilités offertes par ces commentaires et des syntaxes à utiliser dans le contexte de documents HTML et XHTML1.0 traités en tant que text/html.

Commençons par un constat : un petit tour sur le site Cool Homepages, qui sélectionne depuis des années des sites selon la beauté et l’originalité de leur graphisme et/ou de leur navigation (cela étant évidemment subjectif), devrait terrifier les amateurs de standards ouverts : quasiment tous les sites sélectionnés sont désormais réalisés en Flash. Le choix du graphiste serait donc, pour la réalisation d’un beau site, un format propriétaire, alors même qu’on nous vante un XHTML arrivé à maturité ? Cela devrait tout de même inquiéter... Le même constat peut être fait sur toutes les pages de sélection de « beaux » sites. Cela est très paradoxal : depuis l’année 2000, les recommandations pour les nouvelles normes sont publiées et les navigateurs grand public ont largement eu le temps de les intégrer. Pourtant, le HTML semble planté en rase campagne, utilisé pour faire du Web à papa, les navigations rigolotes étant désormais réalisées avec Flash. Tout un discours s’est développé autour des nouvelles normes, basé sur des dogmes pinailleurs et tâtillons, introduisant une rupture avec l’ancien HTML ; et pourtant, on se retrouve aujourd’hui à attendre désespéremment des « innovations » qui viendront récompenser nos efforts vers la « compliance ». Il serait bon, en effet, qu’on s’amuse autant avec le XHTML bien propret du docteur W3C qu’avec le HTML tout pourri dont nous gratifiaient les versions successives de Netscape 2, 3 et 4...
