Cynical Dad: Ego Tripping At The Gates Of Hell

The Wall Street Journal did a roundup of daddy blogs in today's edition. They covered Daddy Types, Rebel Dad, and my buddy MetroDad. And they were insane nice enough to include me as well. I'm assuming all the other daddy blogs were down for maintenance the day they were researching the article.

It was almost as if the Red Sox spent the last few weeks of Spring Training orchestrating an ideal blueprint for Opening Day, and, without a hitch, orchestrated it to perfection once the curtain was raised.

Austinist: Classic Talking Heads Given Glorious Remasterings By Rhino Records

Close listeners coming into musical consciousness in the 1980s were faced with a paradox: while past recordings that had slipped into obscurity had become available once again, the sonic quality and production values that had marked the great age of vinyl had been swept aside by record companies in order to reissue as many albums as possible.

ANYWAY - dead end

Every year when springtime finally arrives and the world is getting ready to stow away pullovers and thick coats in exchange for looser clothing and more colourful shirts, I start to search for two things that mean the start of the warm part of the year for me: one is an electronica record that has nice beats and a laid-back feeling but enough progressiveness to keep me interested yet enough trip hop or dancefloor easiness to keep me relaxed.

Why Lost is genuinely new media

I've been as impressed with the way that the creators of Lost have enabled interaction around the show as with the show itself. Perhaps 'enabled' could be replaced with 'coordinated' or even 'manipulated', but strategically, the call-and-response relationship between the form of the show and the unfolding interaction across varying platforms would appear to indicate a very sophisticated understanding of contemporary media indeed.

Years ago, the e-mail delivery chain had just a few links. You loaded your e-mail and hit "send." After a couple handoffs, the message arrived in your recipient's inbox the way you sent it.Today, that chain has many more links. Some block your e-mail, others help it along. Deliverability has become a big issue for many e-mail senders. It even spawned this column.

One Louder: Full Disclosure: Who's Being Promoted and Who's Promoting It

Blogs operate under the premise of having an uncorrupted opinion, free of manipulation or avarice. Take away this independence and blogs risk becoming nothing more than press release mouths for corporations who have long recognized the value of uninfluenced, "nine out of every ten doctor recommends"-type advocacy. Promoters want real fans to talk up bands. Bloggers achieve what a PR release could never do, speak with the voice of a loyal supporter who promotes the music because it's good.
