International Backup Awareness Day

I'm planning to donate $100 to archive.org as I have a whole new appreciation for how rare an internet-wide full archive service -- one that includes images -- really is.

La duplication est un élément essentiel de la survie de toute archive. Les livres survivent parce-qu'ils sont dupliqués en grand nombre et distribués.

s3fs-fuse - Project Hosting on Google Code

Amazon's S3 is a nice and cheap way to have a remote backup system. But it is REST based which make it not very easy to use. This project just add the normal file system semantic to it.

mathusalem - Google Code

by 2 others

Mathusalem is complementary to Time Machine as it backups automatically one or more directories of your choice to other external disks or remote servers in order to ensure extra safety of your most important data. Be aware that Mathusalem is not designed to "clone" an entire file system or a subportion of it, but instead to optimally handle everyday simple backups.

# you don’t think a few lousy gig’s of disk space on .Mac is enough # you think .Mac is a bit slow # you’d like backup.app to work without paying an annual fee

James Duncan Davidson > Restoring from Time Machine

It’s only mentioned as a side thought that you can also use it to fully restore your hard drive in case of a crash. Restoring an entire disk, however, is the acid test of any backup system.

Je l'ai fait ce week-end. J'ai changé le disque dur 80 Go de mon macbook par un 250 Go. Et j'ai utilisé le restore de Time Machine. Parfait aucun problème.

Painless backups using rdiff-backup : Page 2

by 1 other
The rdiff-backup program is a command-line utility with a simple syntax, that makes backup copies of one or more directories to a target directory. To that extent, it is just straightforward: type the command, and it does the job. Embed a command within a script for extra facilities, and add the script to the scheduled tasks to run automatic backups. Target directories may be on any writable device, and may be safely copied.
