Waste is part of life. Human and animal bodies produce natural waste, whereas societies produce synthetic waste. While we cannot control the level of natural waste as its production is an organic part of biological survival, we can drastically reduce the production of synthetic waste. Natural and synthetic waste come in two varieties - reusable and nonreusable. The aim of a sustainable waste economy is to reuse as much waste as possible, even to the point of reducing waste surplus to zero.

À la recherche d’une asymptote : Pour ne pas subir les contradictions, il faut composer en recherchant l’optimisation dans la mesure *des* possibles.
Ecoshack (blog)
(via)Ecoshack began in 2003 as a Joshua Tree-based experimental design lab, a place where architects, designers, artists and anyone else with a passion for change could design, build and hang out. Experiments in off-the-grid design, culture and lifestyle continue on the site today. Ecoshack is also an LA-based design studio inspired by the ad hoc, indigenous and archetypal typologies typically found at the fringes of society.
Ecoshack was founded by designer/entrepreneur Stephanie Smith

Eco-conscience | Voyager vert? Réduire sa zone de confort? | Vie Nomade

Enjoymentland » Locavore
Eating local food when it’s in season is an increasingly popular goal amongst people who are interested in eating the tastiest, healthiest food while also being good to the environment. Knowing what’s available in your area at a given time of year is often difficult to determine, so we’ve taken on the task of collecting data from a variety of sources and presenting it all in the most understandable of ways.

InfraNet Lab » Blog Archive » Resource Hogs: Greening Prison Infrastructure
fascinantPrisons are perhaps the most resource-intensive institutional infrastructures. This is largely a function of the unique nature of the building typology, which requires continuous operation, high levels of lighting (for security) and water consumption (for the inmates). Moreover, prison cells that contain toilet fixtures are required to have exhaust venting, increasing heating and cooling loads and costs. With the number of prisons on the rise in the US, new green initiatives are being explored to offset these resource hogs.

He did so only after banding together with neighboring landowners to push through zoning changes aimed at limiting development to self-contained clusters, surrounded by wilderness. Under the plan, 80 percent of the 40,000-acre Chattahoochee Hill Country region must be preserved as green space.

L'écologie profonde est-elle un humanisme ? I - Mouvements

Rooftop gardens project | liberating spaces for healthy cities
The Rooftop Gardening Project is an innovative partnership between Alternatives, an international cooperation network, and Santropol Roulant, a community organisation in Montreal. Together we are making widespread rooftop gardening a reality in Montreal and around the world. Our novel soil-less gardens empower urban residents to produce their own food, green their neighbourhoods and build healthy communities.
The Fast Company 50 - 2009: First Solar | Fast Company
The holy grail of the solar industry is so-called grid parity: that moment when the price of a kilowatt-hour of solar energy is about the same as one generated by any other fuel source. We can only guess when that moment will come, but odds are it will be achieved within the next few years using one of the second-generation, thin-film solar technologies of the kind Arizona-based First Solar specializes in.

As they saw it, alternative energy isn’t the solution because we already have all the technology we need. Now we to learn how to conserve and reduce, which, they tell us, can be done. They’re already doing it, after all.

"That's really a political decision because there's more at issue than just the science. It's the issue of what the science says, plus what's feasible politically, plus what's reasonable economically to do," Oppenheimer says.

GOOD » Environmental Arithmetic with Dr. Harry Atwater»
Atwater explained that the power needs of the entire U.S. could be met by solar panels filling a square approximately 100 miles on a side. This is 10,000 square miles—about the size of area between Phoenix to Tuscon.

RSA Arts & Ecology - Francesca Galeazzi: Artist behaving badly
But with that I wanted to throw a comment on why society is so resistant to change. Instead of embracing change, we are inventing new mechanisms to greenwash our consciences, in a way. I didn’t want to say that carbon offsetting is bad because I believe it plays a role within our strategy to tackle climate change. But not as a starting point. It can come in when we’ve done all we can to reduce carbon emissions, all we can to think about the way we use resources, recycle, we produce waste. Only then we can begin to offset our carbon emissions… but not at the start.
