People's Music Store: Build Your Own Record Shop

(via)
"People's Music Store is a newly launched DIY online music store. It was created by the founder of MP3 reseller Bleep.com, Ged Day. People's Music Store styles itself as "the first music store entirely powered by music fans." Basically the service allows you to set up your own custom-designed record store, with music chosen from a catalogue of indie record labels (so far no major record label music). The idea is that you earn points, equivalent to 10% of the price of the single, EP or album that you sell. These points can only be used to buy other music items on the People's Music Store site. There are more than 650 stores currently, with over 250,000 songs in the catalogue - most appear to be available at $0.99 per song or $8.99 per album. The site claims to be "working with" 4,500 labels, including 4AD, XL, Rough Trade, Matador, Dominio, and Ged Day's own Warp. Other than the lack of major label music, there is another minor annoyance for those of us who don't live in the U.S. - international users will frequently run into a "we're sorry, but this release is not available in your country" message. However on the plus side, all the music available for download is DRM-free and at high quality 320Kbps." [reawriteweb]

MixTape.me | make and listen to mixtapes (music playlists)

by 4 others
Similar to Seeqpod, Mixtape.me "grabs music from around the web, notably from Seeqpod, and does a great job of letting you make and browse playlists in an environment reminiscent of desktop music players. You don't need an account to create a Quick Playlist on mixtape.me. You can just start adding tracks from searches and other people's playlists. Registering an account lets you add (but not upload) mp3s and save your playlists. There are also a lot of extra touches, like grabbing song info, lyrics and album artwork automatically. You can also share your playlists easily, even with friends who aren't signed up with Mixtape.me." [downloadsquad]

just hear it | playable music search

by 5 others
"Similiar to Seeqpod and Songza, Just Hear It offers registered and unregistered users alike a seamless interface for song search and playlist creation, all from within the browser. Just Hear It claims to be completely legal, following DMCA guidelines, and paying royalties to all of the major performing-rights organizations, like ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC. In the future, Just Hear It aims to negotiate licenses to share revenue with labels. Currently, much of the music actually seems to come from YouTubeYouTube reviewsYouTube reviews - much like another site we recently reviewed, StreamDrag." - Mashable

TrouserPress.com | reviews

"Trouser Press, online here since August 2002, began with the contents of all five Trouser Press Record Guides, those highly opinionated review books of alternative rock. Thanks to many fine contributors, the site now includes loads of new and updated entries — more than 3,000 in all. While it's by no means definitive, we're working to catch up and keep up. (Hit the What's New button to see what's been added recently.) There's a message board for sharing your thoughts about music and more. The Trouser Press Magazine button takes you to a cover archive with anecdotes about the issues and a complete index to the magazine's decade-long run. And for the truly devoted, we've got TP merch for sale."

3VOOR12 - Luisterpaal - Full Album Streams

by 1 other
"This is a Dutch site, in Dutch, leaving me with next to no idea what is going on here--except that, clearly, this site at any given time hosts a bunch of cool album streams. It's all very legal and above board, as the Luisterpaal (which might or might not mean "listening pole") is part of something called the VPRO, which is a television and radio network in the Netherlands. As far as I can see you'll find streams here that you won't anywhere else, and they change with unrelenting regularity. Best of all, the people behind this have really eclectic--and excellent--taste. Highly recommended" [http://www.fingertipsmusic.com/streamings.htm]

The Thinking Man’s Take On: Genre Definitions at Pretty Much Amazing!

"Recently I’ve been doing some thinking about genres – what they mean, what purpose they serve, what we’re supposed to do with them. Essentially, I’ve been wondering about how we define genres, and what the results of those definitions could be. Or in an even more meta sense, why we define genres. As a society we have become obsessed with pigeonholing things – tagging them appropriately and specifically so that they can be indexed by search engines to find an audience. But to what end? Is it worthwhile?"
