This site will hope to provide both content and community for those who are interested in Ubuntu on the server. Ubuntu, more often than not, is viewed as a newby distribution for desktop use. Even though Ubuntu makes a great desktop, it also makes a great robust server as well and this site hopes to focus on that. The framework of the site is still being developed so bare with me here a bit, but enjoy!

The great thing about Realmac's QuickSnapper site is that if JavaScript is turned off, the list of snaps is visible by default. So we'll follow suit. It's also worth noting that their version only keep pulling in new items until it hits the end. I'll show you how you can keep the list looping, and in a follow up tutorial I'll show you how to hook this in to an Ajax hit that doesn't hammer your server and keeps the effect nice and smooth.

Server2Go is a Webserver that runs out of the box without any installation and on write protected media. Mobile data synchronization is becoming increasingly important for many people, and various standards have arisen to perform this two-way copying 'over-the-air'. SystemImager lets you create images of your Linux installations. To do so, you need an image server (should have enough disk space to store your images) and a so-called golden client (i.e., the system of which you want to make an image). This means that you have to install some software on your image server and on your golden client in order to run SystemImager. This tutorial shows how to install a SystemImager server and a SystemImager client, both using Ubuntu 8.10, and how to create/update/restore/delete images.

MySQLTuner is a script written in Perl that will assist you with your MySQL configuration and make recommendations for increased performance and stability. Within seconds, it will display statistics about your MySQL installation and the areas where it can be improved. It’s key to remember that MySQLTuner is a script which can assist you with your server, but it is not the solution to a badly performing MySQL server. The best performance gains come from a thorough review of the queries sent to the server, and an evaluation of the MySQL server itself. A qualified developer in your application’s programming or scripting language should be able to work with a MySQL database administrator to find improvements for your server. Once the server and application are optimized well, you may need to consider hardware upgrades to the physical server itself. If you're using LVM based storage for your domains this script will create a snapshot and backup each server to a local drive or a remote system using rdiff-backup.

The configuration described here is not very complicated but still needs to be done carefully. Box Backup is an open source, completely automatic, on-line backup system. It has the following key features: * All backed up data is stored on the server in files on a filesystem - no tape, archive or other special devices are required. * The server is trusted only to make files available when they are required - all data is encrypted and can be decoded only by the original client. This makes it ideal for backing up over an untrusted network (such as the Internet), or where the server is in an uncontrolled environment. * A backup daemon runs on systems to be backed up, and copies encrypted data to the server when it notices changes - so backups are continuous and up-to-date (although traditional snapshot backups are possible too). * Only changes within files are sent to the server, just like rsync, minimising the bandwidth used between clients and server. This makes it particularly suitable for backing up between distant locations, or over the Internet. * It behaves like tape - old file versions and deleted files are available. * Old versions of files on the server are stored as changes from the current version, minimising the storage space required on the server. Files are the server are also compressed to minimise their size. * Choice of backup behaviour - it can be optimised for document or server backup. * It is designed to be easy and cheap to run a server. It has a portable implementation, and optional RAID implemented in userland for reliability without complex server setup or expensive hardware.

MAGIC-SMTPD is a drop in replacement for Dan Bernsteins qmail-smtpd, and was originally designed to be part of the LinuxMagic Magic Mail Server. This OpenSource version has been released to allow others to benefit from it's anti-spam components, and valid user checking to reduce server loads and spam volumes. It is designed to support stock qmail installations, qmail/vpopmail installations, as well as having database support. Designed for ISP service, this will work for all mail servers large and small. Comments are welcome. Support for other mailers is expected in the future. Complete support packages are also available.

Many times, you want to execute a command not only on one server, but also on several servers. The disadvantage of script is commands do not run in parallel on all servers. However, several tools exist to automate this procedure in parallel. With the help of tool called tentakel, you run distributed command execution. It is a program for executing the same command on many hosts in parallel using ssh (it supports other methods too). Main advantage is you can create several sets of servers according requirements. For example webserver group, mail server group, home servers group etc. The command is executed in parallel on all servers in this group (time saving). By default, every result is printed to stdout (screen). The output format can be defined for each group.

Out of the box, Zimbra is tuned for a fairly beefy machine. Zimbra will easily consume 1.5GB of ram with default settings. Some of these changes mean turning off a few Zimbra features and there are quite a few ways to do this, so you will need to evaluate memory usage given your own situation. If you simply can't live without *all* the Zimbra features or intend to support a larger (> 15) number of users, my only suggestion is to get more ram ;). But if you are willing to make some compromises, please read on. The changes below are ones that I found to be a reasonable compromise. With a few easy changes, you can bring the memory consumption way down, so that it will hum along just fine on a server with ~512MB of ram. Of course this reduces the amount of users that your server can support, but I've found that for a small installation of around 15 users, these settings will work just fine and give you the same performance as the out-of-the-box config with gobs of RAM. The server I have been testing with has 560MB of ram, and after tuning consumes all the ram and only about 80MB of swap on average. You will find that if you don't make changes similar to the ones suggested below with ~512MB of ram, your Zimbra install will slowly creep up its consumption of swap and your Zimbra install will start to crawl. Also, > 512MB seems to be about the minimum amount of ram to get a useful/zippy server

This guide explains how you can run virtual machines with Sun xVM VirtualBox 2.0 on a headless Ubuntu 8.04 server. Normally you use the VirtualBox GUI to manage your virtual machines, but a server does not have a desktop environment. Fortunately, VirtualBox comes with a tool called VBoxHeadless that allows you to connect to the virtual machines over a remote desktop connection, so there's no need for the VirtualBox GUI.

This howto explains installing Zivios Master Service version 0.5.0. Zivios is an n-tiered PHP-5 application, providing identity management, single sign-on, user, group and computer provisioning, as well as remote management of services. When it's time to convert a physical machine to a virtual one, use these steps to make the move safely and with a small maintenance window.

I have tried to run both Debian Etch and Ubuntu 8.04 Server on the cluster nodes, in Dom0. I started my tests with Debian, but I had some issues with slow samba performance in one VM that I couldn't fix so I decided to try Ubuntu Server, for the first time. Both installation went OK, the main difference was that I used mainly source code in Debian, but only packages in Ubuntu. I actually ran into more problems with Ubuntu due to some early bugs in the 8.04 release, will describe them below as I go along. And I have still to prove that running this setup in Ubuntu is stable.
