by 8 others (via)I want to talk with you today about how teenagers are using a website called MySpace.com. I will briefly describe the site and then discuss how youth use it for identity production and socialization in contemporary American society.
I have been following MySpace since its launch in 2003. Initially, it was the home to 20-somethings interested in indie music in Los Angeles. Today, you will be hard pressed to find an American teenager who does not know about the site, regardless of whether or not they participate. Over 50 million accounts have been created and the majority of participants are what would be labeled youth - ages 14-24. MySpace has more pageviews per day than any site on the web except Yahoo! (yes, more than Google or MSN).

Making An RSS Feed
by 4 others (via)RSS is a method of distributing links to content in your web site that you'd like others to use. In other words, it's a mechanism to "syndicate" your content.
To understand syndication, consider the "real world" situation where artist Scott Adams draws a daily Dilbert cartoon. The cartoon is made available to any newspaper that cares to run it, in exchange for a fee -- and 2,000 papers in 65 countries do so.
Unlike Scott Adams, syndication of web content via RSS is unlikely to make you rich. However, it can be an easy way to draw attention to your material, bringing you some traffic and perhaps a little net fame, depending on how good your information is.

Processing XML with the XML Pull Parser
(via)The DOMParser is probably the most commonly used Java object for reading and validating XML documents. The DOMParser reads the XML and (depending on the parser initialization) will validate the XML against an XML schema. If the XML is valid, the DOMParser will return a Document (DOM) object, which represents the XML as a tree structure. The XML can be processed by walking this tree. An example of how the DOMParser can be applied to processing arithmetic expressions in XML format is discussed on a companion web page.

Libwww - the W3C Sample Code Library
(via)Libwww is a highly modular, general-purpose client side Web API written in C for Unix and Windows (Win32). It's well suited for both small and large applications, like browser/editors, robots, batch tools, etc. Pluggable modules provided with libwww include complete HTTP/1.1 (with caching, pipelining, PUT, POST, Digest Authentication, deflate, etc), MySQL logging, FTP, HTML/4, XML (expat), RDF (SiRPAC), WebDAV, and much more. The purpose of libwww is to serve as a testbed for protocol experiments.

It's fairly complete and offers a few things SRE did not (like simultaneous play by several players). I've been playing for a few days and it's fun! The game isn't quite balanced yet, but that will take a little bit of time to fine tune. Try it out!"
