Food firms pledge to cut mileage

Business urged to avoid flights

Businesses across the world should switch to video conferencing to cut emissions from transport. Building activity on the rise

Commercial building activity rose in July according to the latest industry report. The Total Commercial Activity Index, from property services firm Savills showed a rise to 58.2 from 56.2 in an index where anything above 50 represents an expanding market.

Aspen business bought by private equity firm

SUSSEX-based companies Aspen Pumps and BBJ Engineering have been bought by Inflexion Private Equity. Founded in 1992, Aspen is a leading European supplier of condensate pumps, employing 50 staff and operating internationally in over 50 countries. Sister company BBJ supplies a range of air conditioning accessories.

B&Q launches ‘no hassle’ returns policy

Customer feedback prompts refresh. B&Q is to offer customers a 90-day returns policy. With proof of purchase, shoppers can now gain a full refund on a product for up to 90 days, otherwise they can still exchange goods or receive a credit note valid for up to one year.

Kingfisher up on private equity bid; Home Retail reassures brokers. Kingfisher saw its shares hit the heights on rumours of a possible bid from private-equity groups. Industry analysts said that interest centres on Kingfisher's international operations, including a 21% stake in Hornbach, its expansion in China, Turkey and Taiwan, and 'substantial' property assets, which represent 50% of the company's current market value.

Screwfix to open Peterborough site

Topps Tiles has reported a 4.7% like-for-like rise in sales for the first 14 weeks of its trading period. Overall revenue rose 12.6% (2006: up 0.7%).
