When answering the question what's the difference between Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu and Edubuntu the answer is rather simple. All four Ubuntu based Linux distributions use the main Ubuntu core while adding their choice of desktop environments and applications. Ubuntu is a general purpose Linux distribution that uses the Gnome desktop environment and gtk based applications while Kubuntu is virtually the same replacing the Gnome desktop environment with the KDE desktop environment and gtk applications with qt4 applications.
