Yahoo! makes a lot of structured data available to developers, primarily through its web services. These services require developers to locate the right URLs for accessing them and the documentation for querying them. In contrast, the YQL platform provides a single endpoint service that enables developers to query, filter, and combine data across Yahoo! and beyond. YQL exposes a SQL-like SELECT syntax that that is both familiar to developers and expressive enough for getting the right data. Through the SHOW and DESC commands we enable developers to discover the available data sources and structure without opening another web browser.

It’s a relief to know that I’m not the only one that admires Fedora’s content model and wonders why DSpace should try to reinvent that with it’s “2.0″ vision versus adopting Fedora as a storage and web services layer and benefiting from a shared developer base.

The Services module allows Drupal developers to easily build out web services on their sites and is an important component for web portals that offer access to content through an API.

SWORD (Simple Web-service Offering Repository Deposit) will take forward the Deposit protocol developed by a small working group as part of the JISC Digital Repositories Programme by implementing it as a lightweight web-service in four major repository software platforms: EPrints, DSpace, Fedora and IntraLibrary. The existing protocol documentation will be finalised by project partners and a prototype ‘smart deposit’ tool will be developed to facilitate easier and more effective population of repositories. The project intends to take an iterative approach to developing and revising the protocol, web-services and client implementation through evaluative testing and feedback mechanisms. Community acceptance and take-up will be sought through dissemination activities. The project is led by UKOLN, University of Bath, with partners at the Aberystwyth University, the University of Southampton and Intrallect Ltd. The project aims to improve the efficiency and quality of repository deposit and to diversity and expedite the options for timely population of repositories with content whilst promoting a common deposit interface and supporting the Information Environment principles of interoperability.

SIMILE seeks to enhance inter-operability among digital assets, schemata/vocabularies/ontologies, metadata, and services. A key challenge is that the collections which must inter-operate are often distributed across individual, community, and institutional stores. We seek to be able to provide end-user services by drawing upon the assets, schemata/vocabularies/ontologies, and metadata held in such stores. SIMILE will leverage and extend DSpace, enhancing its support for arbitrary schemata and metadata, primarily though the application of RDF and semantic web techniques. The project also aims to implement a digital asset dissemination architecture based upon web standards. The dissemination architecture will provide a mechanism to add useful "views" to a particular digital artifact (i.e. asset, schema, or metadata instance), and bind those views to consuming services.

Alors que l'ASP traditionnel se limite à la fourniture d'applications en mode hébergé, le SaaS se propose de donner accès à une plate-forme applicative modulaire, permettant d'y inclure également des développements spécifiques.

Le service Webmaster Tools de Google qui vient récemment de connaître certains changements dans son interface, propose également un nouveau service intéressant pour les responsables de sites web. En effet, une rubrique "Statistics" propose divers outils dont "Subscriber stats" qui permet de connaître le nombre d'abonnés aux différents flux RSS et Atom proposés par le site. Cependant, seuls les internautes utilisant les services Google tels que iGoogle, Google Reader ou encore Orkut sont comptabilisés. Cet outil est toutefois intéressant car il permet de se faire une première idée sur l'audience de son site quand on n'utilise pas un service comme Feeburner.
