PUBLIC MARKS with tag resolution

This is an attempt to compile a list of relevant specifications for all modern smart phones and mobile internet devices. It is primarily for a quick reference sheet when trying to target a specific platform with CSS media queries.

Yesterday John Gruber wrote about the upped pixel density in the upcoming iPhone (960x640 instead of 480x320), and why Apple did this. He also wondered what the consequences for web developers would be.

A Toolset For Managing Screen Resolutions

In this mini-series I will explain how viewports and the widths of various important elements work, such as the html element, as well as the window and the screen.

For three generations of the iPhone, Apple kept the screen consistent (320x480 pixels and 3.5 inches diagonal). But now Apple's new iPhone 4 boasts the "highest resolution phone screen ever (960x640 pixels, 3.5 inches diagonal, & an 800:1 contrast ratio)." What's the impact to designers?

But there is a new found way that is available to anyone that owns an Apple TV or possibly a regular Mac! While browsing my Apple TV, I noticed that when a movie, TV show, or song is selected, there is a high-res image of the album/cover art displayed to the left. This got me thinking, it has to be stored somewhere for it to show it. I did some digging and found a folder in the file system for just that purpose. Full-sized art in unencrypted jpg format is “cached” in separate folders on the hard drive. With a SSH or FTP-enabled Apple TV, navigate to /mnt/Scratch/private/tmp/Front Row/Images There, folders contain the cover art of all music/TV shows/movies that was selected in the last browsing session! There will also be the low-res images there, but ignore them. The high-res images will be named original.jpg.

Google Browser Size is a visualization of browser window sizes for people who visit Google. For example, the "90%" contour means that 90% of people visiting Google have their browser window open to at least this size or larger.

Resolutions I was looking for the top three most used monitor resolutions - pixel width and height - for making desktop wallpapers in my flickr stream. It dawned on me that knowing the three most used pixel counts weren't as important as moderately high resolution images in the correct format ratios. Here are the top three as of June 2009. 1. 1024x768 ( 1:1.33) 2. 1280x1024 ( 1:1.25 ) 3. 1280x800 ( 1:1.6 ) For example, the MacBook Pro supports 1440x900, which is the same dimensions as the 1280x800. Although there will be some scaling, the 26% difference of area between the two shouldn't cause enough stretching to make the image unpleasant as a desktop background.
