White House Chief of Staff Card Resigns

by jasontromm (via)
President Bush announced the resignation of White House chief of staff Andy Card on Wednesday and replaced him with budget director Joshua Bolten, saying "the next three years will demand much of those who serve our country." ()() Is this the first step in a Whitehouse shake-up that will lead to Dick Cheney's resignation? I certainly hope so, Bush needs to appoint Condi as his successor by making her VP now!

President Can Ignore Non-Legislative Earmarks

by jasontromm (via)
“The president does not need to wait on Congress to exercise line-item veto power,” said Dr. Coburn. “Under the law, wasteful earmarks that are only listed in conference reports can, and should, be ignored by executive branch agencies. If the president takes this stance, Congress will back down because they will be making an argument they will never win with the public. No rational voter will tolerate Congress holding up appropriations for vital services or national defense priorities so politicians can secure their earmarks and pet projects. I hope the president does not hesitate to use this power that is already at his disposal.”

Media, Democrats Exaggerate Warning of Levee Breaches

by jasontromm
Critics of the Bush administration have promoted video of an Aug. 28, 2005, teleconference between emergency management officials and the president as proof that the White House was warned that levees around New Orleans would likely fail against Hurricane Katrina. But a closer examination of the recording and transcript shows no mention that the Crescent City's levees would be breached.

Washington prayer too true for school

by jasontromm
A federal judge has ruled against a public school teacher who filed a lawsuit after administrators removed Christian-themed postings from his classroom, including a depiction of George Washington praying at Valley Forge and news clippings about the faith of President Bush and former Attorney General John Ashcroft.

Dick Cheney to quit after elections

by jasontromm
Vice President Dick Cheney might retire within a year, shortly after the mid-term elections, according to senior Republican sources who spoke to Insight magazine. The sources said they envision Cheney being persuaded to step down as he becomes an increasing liability to President Bush.

Accidents Happen

by jasontromm
The hunter shot by Dick Cheney said Friday that "accidents do and will happen" and said he is sorry for all the hullabaloo and scrutiny the incident has brought upon the vice president and his family.

Bush-Quail '06

by jasontromm
The wascally Washington press corps is at it again, upset that a local reporter got the scoop on Dick Cheney's hunting accident and asking what the president knew and when did he know it? The press was already gunning for the vice president over whether he was behind the leak that Scooter Libby got indicted for allegedly fibbing about, and other issues. Now their version of a wanted poster has "armed and dangerous" added to it after Cheney accidentally shot a hunting companion, attorney Harry Whittington.

Cheney Doesn’t Owe the Media an Apology

by jasontromm
The hissy fit thrown by the national media appears to be working. Just like spoiled children, the media’s temper tantrum over the lack of information flowing directly to them regarding Vice President Cheney’s hunting accident has now started to yield results. Democrats, media members, and even some Republicans are beginning to criticize the vice president. Get real! Iran is enriching uranium, and the only concern in Washington appears to be the hurt feelings of left-wing journalists.

Slow Leak: How Cheney Stalled News Reports of Hunting Accident - TIME.com

by zboog
Word of the mishap took 20 hours to get out as the Vice President insisted on telling a local newspaper before everyone else, sources say

Is the Supreme Court Really Supreme?

by jasontromm
One hundred fifty years ago, a Constitutional crisis took place similar to one that we have been threatened with over Roe v. Wade -- one in which no moral consensus could be achieved between the three branches of government. The first constitutional crisis was over the hot-button issue of that day: slavery. The Supreme Court declared an act of Congress unconstitutional, and the president, Abraham Lincoln -- to his everlasting credit -- refused to recognize the Court’s decision.

Partial-birth ban headed to Supreme Court?

by jasontromm
With three federal appellate courts now ruling the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2004 unconstitutional, the issue likely will be decided by the newly configured Supreme Court, with two conservative justices recently appointed by President Bush.

A Blueprint for Health-care Freedom

by jasontromm
The White House has been dropping hints that the president will make health-care reform the centerpiece of his State of the Union address. The Bush administration's health care record is, to put it delicately, inconsistent. It has supported efforts to remove government influence over the health care sector, such as health savings accounts (HSAs). On the other hand, the president signed into law the largest expansion of federal power over health care in generations the ill-fated Medicare drug program.

Fundraising Foolishness

by jasontromm
This week, more than two months after President Bush nominated him, the Senate will finally vote on Judge Samuel Alito’s elevation to the Supreme Court. In a final, all-too-typical move, the vote was put off a week at the behest of Alito’s opponents. Why? Nobody seriously expects another week to make a difference. With a few exceptions, senators probably knew how they were going to vote before the hearings. So, why put off the vote?

Harry Belafonte treasonous?

by jasontromm
Los Angeles activist Jesse Lee Peterson has questioned the sanity of entertainer Harry Belafonte for meeting with Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez and, in local media, calling President Bush "the greatest terrorist in the world."

A Look at Abramoff-Related Donations

by jasontromm
President Bush and many lawmakers have announced they are refunding or giving to charity some or all of the donations they or their political action committees received from once-powerful lobbyist Jack Abramoff, his associates or clients.

FISA vs. the Constitution

by jasontromm
Congress can't usurp the president's power to spy on America's enemies. In the continuing saga of the surveillance "scandal," with some congressional Democrats denouncing President Bush as a lawbreaker and even suggesting that impeachment hearings may be in order, it is important to step back and put things in historical context. First of all, the Founding Fathers knew from experience that Congress could not keep secrets. In 1776, Benjamin Franklin and his four colleagues on the Committee of Secret Correspondence unanimously concluded that they could not tell the Continental Congress about covert assistance being provided by France to the American Revolution, because "we find by fatal experience that Congress consists of too many members to keep secrets."

Report implicating Clinton: Will it be hidden for good?

by jasontromm
Bipartisan congressional negotiators squelch independent counsel's findings Though it has had scant attention from the mainstream media, a bipartisan effort to squelch an independent counsel's final report on Clinton-era abuse of the Internal Revenue Service and Justice Department has gotten the attention of Web activists and commentators, causing a growing call for the release of the document that is said to including damning evidence against the 42nd president and his administration.

Hillary Would Abuse Patriot Act

by jasontromm
Republican Sen. Larry Craig is citing Hillary Clinton as the reason he opposes renewing the Patriot Act in its current form, saying Mrs. Clinton is likely to abuse the security measure if she becomes president - unless additional safeguards are built in.
