Google Code Blog: Make your websites run faster, automatically -- try mod_pagespeed for Apache

by srcmax & 1 other

So today, we’re introducing a module for the Apache HTTP Server called mod_pagespeed to perform many speed optimizations automatically. We’re starting with more than 15 on-the-fly optimizations that address various aspects of web performance, including optimizing caching, minimizing client-server round trips and minimizing payload size. We’ve seen mod_pagespeed reduce page load times by up to 50% (an average across a rough sample of sites we tried) -- in other words, essentially speeding up websites by about 2x, and sometimes even faster.

How I'm using Amazon S3 to serve media files

by fredbird & 4 others
The solution hit me the other day -- I can just use Amazon's new Amazon S3 data-storage service to host chicagocrime.org's media files, so my own Apache server can focus on serving dynamic pages. S3 is very cheap -- 15 cents a month for each gig of storage (and I have only 936 K of media files) and 20 cents per gig bandwidth. That's peanuts.

ONLamp.com -- Caching Dynamic Content with Apache httpd

mod_cache has been around for a while, but there are some new features in it that can help you make better use of your server's resources. Although people have traditionally used the caching capabilities of mod_cache with proxied content, that isn't its only feature. You can also cache your dynamic content and serve it as rapidly as on-disk files.
