USA Today website innovates with horizontal experience, information layers | Poynter.

USA Today introduced a new version of its website Saturday, one day after it debuted a new design in print. My overall impression: The new site does not feel like a newspaper website, it feels like a news website. It also feels a bit like an iPad app, with a horizontal experience and visual emphasis. A click feels like a finger swipe. Gannett/USA Today Director of Product Design Bill Thornton said in a tweet, “We think the key is to make the experience more app-like and have fewer hard page refreshes.” Still, the site feels like USA Today because it’s anchored by images and color. Here are five reasons the reinvention works for me.

Blottr Olympics

Citizen journalism site Blottr has launched a channel to encourage people to upload and share their photographs and videos of the Olympics. Blottr is offering to print the best photo from each contributor and turn it into a fridge magnet that it will give to those who submitted the pictures "free of charge as a keep sake and memory of the games". Blottr is also planning to showcase reports of the games, including "profiles of participating athletes from the smaller, less prominent countries in the world", the outlet said in a release.

Newser's super-short news summaries, doled out judiciously so as not to overwhelm the reader, are exactly what the mobile news experience should be. Get the reader in and out with bite-size chunks, and give them an infinitely scrolling list of stories to click on should they want to spend a little more time with the app.
