I introduced an element of randomness into a recent map design. Misplaced buildings and overlapping areas of texture bring energy and excitement to the experience of viewing a map. The end result is a little disorienting, but still mostly familiar:

You know, for when you’re Jason Bourne and you’re on the run from the man and you break into the command center and you pull up the secret map interface? That one. This map is constructed using a single image layer of CloudMade tiles. The tiles are in spherical mercator coordinates, and the map has standard interaction controls, so this basic example is a useful starting point for customization. Register a developer account with CloudMade for your own API key.

The goal of this site is to investigate and show how web browsers can be used for thematic mapping. A thematic map displays the spatial pattern of a social or physical phenomenon, such as population density, life expectancy or climate change.

Polymaps provides speedy display of multi-zoom datasets over maps, and supports a variety of visual presentations for tiled vector data, in addition to the usual cartography from OpenStreetMap, CloudMade, Bing, and other providers of image-based web maps.

In my last post, I attempted to create an animated weather map in Bing Maps by using a custom tilelayer that pointed to a set of dynamically-generated animated GIF image tiles. Note that the tilesource itself never changed – it was the tile images which the tilelayer pointed to that were animated, rather than the tilesource itself. There are a number of limitations with this approach, since there is no way in the client application to control the animation

Today, I'm starting a new blog series written from Foldøy, a tiny island in south west Norway which will be my home for two months. In this first post, I'll show you how to deliver zoomable high-resolution images with Leaflet. I've brought along 17 kg of mapping and visualization books to keep me occupied

Leaflet is a modern open-source JavaScript library for mobile-friendly interactive maps. It is developed by Vladimir Agafonkin with a team of dedicated contributors. Weighing just about 33 KB of JS, it has all the features most developers ever need for online maps. Leaflet is designed with simplicity, performance and usability in mind. It works efficiently across all major desktop and mobile platforms out of the box, taking advantage of HTML5 and CSS3 on modern browsers while still being accessible on older ones. It can be extended with a huge amount of plugins, has a beautiful, easy to use and well-documented API and a simple, readable source code that is a joy to contribute to.

Drop images of maps into MapTiler and with a couple of clicks the software prepares HTML files with viewers based on Google Maps API, Leaflet and OpenLayers. Enjoy the maps on your mobile phone or tablet even while offline.

Includes a template to use the Image Cutter with Google Maps API v3 and fixes a bug with the maximum zoom level in version 1.41.

I visited the Google+ Project website the other day and to my surprise, it was powered by the Google Maps engine! It is somewhat creative to re-use the Maps engine for any purpose other than mapping. It is just beautiful. It also reminds me of the Art Project I've seen a while back that uses the Street View engine. A must see. Anyways, I'm pleased to show you two samples today: they both let you navigate into an image using the Google Maps engine. I'm also giving up the necessary tools to do it yourself. Enjoy!
