KDE on Windows News RSS April 7th, 2009 : KDE 4.2.2 for Windows available The KDE on Windows team today announced the immediate availability of "Cano", (a.k.a KDE 4.2.2), another bugfix and maintenance update of the KDE release. New in this release is an unstable snapshot of K3B, the KDE cd burning application. As a service release, the changelog contains a list of bugfixes and improvements. Note that the changelog is usually incomplete, for a complete list of changes that went into KDE 4.2.2, you can browse the Subversion log. KDE 4.2.2 also ships a more complete set of translations. The binary packages could be installed with the installer by using the version "stable 4.2.2" (or "stable latest"). In case you are upgrading your KDE installation, deselect the skip basic settings checkbox on the first installer page and press next until you are guided to the release settings page where you can choose the required version. Welcome to The KDE on Windows Project The KDE on Windows Project is aimed at native porting of the KDE applications to MS Windows. Currently Windows 2000, XP, 2003 and Vista are supported. The preferred way of installing KDE apps under Windows is the KDE-Installer. See the Download section on the sidebar for more informations. KDE on Windows is not in the final state, so applications can be unsuitable for day to day use yet. For some help from the project members join the IRC channel #kde-windows on freenode. You can join our mailing list kde-windows(@)kde.org for news and announcements. If you're interested in helping to track some issues, and get some of your favourite KDE apps working correctly, you can start by reading the KDE TechBase documentation. To get an overview of this project you should enter the main KDE TechBase section.

KDE on Cygwin is the port of Qt and KDE to Windows using Cygwin, the POSIX emulation layer for Windows, and the Cygwin XFree86 server. We think that KDE is a great desktop and has the opportunity to be a big player in the 'desktop environment' area. One of the main reasons for this is because of the famous Qt library, which is designed to be very platform independent and has already been ported to many operating systems. Hence porting KDE applications from one UNIX derived operating system to another is relatively painless. The one operating system this doesn't hold true for is Windows.

Funcionamento Existe um Servidor de Janelas que chama o modo gráfico (no Ubuntu, por exemplo, o X.org é o utilizado, mas também existe o XFree86). O servidor chama o modo gráfico e permite a execução de programas feitos com bibliotecas especialmente criadas para esse modo. Esses programas especiais (que nada mais são do que programas com rotinas gráficas para botões, menus...) na verdade só trazem informações, quanto à janela, sobre o recheio, o título e o tipo de janela. Este último apenas definindo se é uma janela de aplicativo, de diálogo... Assim, se for executado apenas o Servidor Gráfico, tem-se o ambiente gráfico, mas cada programa que esteja neste ambiente gráfico (o ambiente não traz interface para chamar programas) estará parado num canto, sem barra de título. Não se pode sequer maximizar a janela ou tirar uma janela da frente de outra. Até mesmo fechar a janela só será permitido se houver uma opção assim nos menus. Por isso não se usa um Servidor Gráfico sozinho. Para executar operações com janelas, são usados os Gerenciadores de Janelas. O que eles fazem basicamente é colocar uma barra de título em cada programa executado que tenha sido feito para modo gráfico. Além disso, eles provêem uma série de operações adicionais, como facilitar a alternância entre janelas, por exemplo. Basicamente é só isso mas, como sempre, programas amplamente utilizados como o Gnome não pararam no básico para chegarem onde chegaram. Há outros recursos que praticamente todos os Gerenciadores de Janelas de hoje precisam ter, dentre os quais o mais curioso e notável é a capacidade de gerenciar muitas Áreas de Trabalho. O Gerenciador de Janelas padrão no Ubuntu é o Gnome, mas outros também podem ser instalados e utilizados sem dificuldade

Learn and Discover with the KDE Educational applications Desktop Planetarium, KStars, provides an accurate graphical simulation of the night sky, from any location on Earth, at any date and time. It can control telescopes and has many tools for the amateur or professional astronomer. This new version now shows millions of stars, can predict conjunctions and has a Sky Calendar. If you start it for the first time, a welcome wizard will show. After choosing your location, you can click the "Download Extra Data..." to select additional star and image data to install. Millions of stars are available in the packages, as well as inline thumbnail images which show images of objects right on the sky. There are several interesting educational applications of this program as well. Pushing "CTRL-F" will bring up the find dialog. Type a name of a heavenly object to find it, like the moon. You might want to turn off "Toggle opaque ground" (most right button on the toolbar) to see the object if it is below the horizon. If you now choose "Equatorial coordinates" by hitting the space bar and set the time per second in the toolbar to 1 hour, watch. The moon moves - but, seen from the equitorial, not in a horizontal line! Why is that? The reason is that the earth spins, but not entirely as you might expect: there is a tilt and a wobble to the spin of the earth, and thus the observer moves up and down... Making science visible to children in such a way is a strong tool in the classroom, and this is a truly educational application. And it is not just for children, so be sure to have a look at this application if you are interested in astronomy!
