Math:Rules - Strange Attractors on Behance

by cascamorto
I wanted to create a series of pictures representing mathematical shapes on white background, like a "tribute to mathematics" that I often use in my work. I chose the "strange attractors" for their dynamic forms and "chaotic feel". Because I'm not a mathematician, I relied on several sites. Including one especially, very complete with free plugins for Cinema 4D making possible to configure these shapes easily. The site is in German, but Google translate did the job very well, so many thanks to the author ! edit : workflow tutorial here ! edit : series finally available for printing on limited edition here !

Math:Rules, Strange Attractors

by cascamorto
As a tribute to mathematics, freelance illustrator and digital artist Chaotic Atmospheres, aka Istvan, set out to illustrate mathematical attractors in their most dynamic parameters. The result is “Math : Rules”, a collection of “strange attractors” represented in their 3-dimensional forms. In mathematics, an attractor is a region in an n-dimensional space which changes over time according to an evolving and approaching variable. “Strange attractors” are specials kinds of attractors constructed from more complicated sets with fractal structures; they are less predictable and more “chaotic”. Although based on mathematical formulas, Istvan’s goal isn’t to deduce any scientific breakthroughs; rather, it’s simply to produce aesthetically pleasing images that speak to the spectator. No ideas are imposed, giving each spectator complete freedom to interpret what they see. Istvan has long abandoned the idea that the concept within an image is more important than the image itself. Instead he finds experimental subjects and then creates images that enhance their most interesting forms. Based out of Geneva, Istvan now focuses primarily on 3D nature-themed collections created using generative art techniques. His collections have attracted the attention of diverse audiences and have been featured many times on Behance as well as on numerous other sites and blogs.
