by clsu
Large open source projects face many organizational challenges in providing a supportive infrastructure for developers. This talk, by FreeBSD Release Engineer Murray Stokely, provides a case study of the FreeBSD development model that highlights the specific tools, methodologies, and organizational structures used to support development by over 300 core developers and tens of thousands of contributors from around the world. Particular emphasis will be placed on the software release process. The procedures used by the release engineering team are well documented and have been successfully used by many large companies such as Yahoo! and Juniper Networks to widely deploy customized releases of FreeBSD. All of the tools required to build a complete release of FreeBSD are available in the source tree. Learn not just how the FreeBSD release process works, but also some solutions to the challenges posed by the management of any large distributed open source project.
