International Quilt Study Center & Museum : Making a Quilt

by sbrothier
What is a quilt ? A quilt is a layered textile composed of a decorative top, a warm filler called batting or wadding, and a pratical backing. The three layers are joined together by quilting stitches, or sometimes are held together with regularly spaced yarn or string ties.

The Suffering Bastard -- The Cocktail Spirit with Robert Hess -- Small Screen Network

by sbrothier
The original name for this drink was apparently the Suffering Bar Steward, but as one might expect in a noisy bar after a few drinks, the name gets a little mangled. There are several recipes for this floating about. For mine I turned to one of my favorite sources, Beachbum Berrry's Grog Log, by Jeff Berry.

Arago: People, Postage & the Post

by sbrothier
The online database of the National Postal Museum, Arago™, was named in honor of the French physicist, astronomer and politician, François Arago (1786-1853). A friend of James Smithson (benefactor of the Smithsonian Institution), Arago believed that science and available technologies should be used to advance public knowledge and improve everyday life. Renowned as a scientist, he was also a humanitarian who used his political roles to introduce social reforms – the abolition of slavery, universal manhood suffrage, and the education of the lower classes – not only in France but also in its colonial possessions.

SI NMNH - Jellyfish Romance - (Carybdea sivickisi)

by sbrothier (via)
For most jellyfish, reproduction is not a particularly romantic affair. Typically, males release sperm into the water so that their genetic material can bump into and fertilize eggs released by female jellyfish in a similar fashion. This behavior, known as mass spawning, allows jellyfish to “mate” without the lovers even needing to meet.

The American Image - The Photographs of John Collier Jr.

by sbrothier
The American Image: The Photographs of John Collier Jr. was developed with a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The Maxwell Museum of Anthropology and College of Education’s Technology & Education Center (TEC) at the University of New Mexico collaborated with Ideum to develop this interactive website. Most of the photographs that appear on this site were taken for the Farm Security Administration/Office of War Information (FSA/OWI) during the war years of the 1940s. The FSA/OWI hired John Collier Jr. to document day-to-day life in America with a focus on issues of civil defense and public morale. The images that appear in the collection were taken from across the country, from New Mexico to Maine and provide a snapshot of ordinary life in those extraordinary times.
