El chileno Manfred Max-Neef estudió economía e hizo carrera como empleado de la empresa Shell. En 1957 dio las espaldas a la industria y se dedicó a estudiar los problemas de los países en desarrollo. Trabajó para organizaciones de la ONU y en diversas universidades de EE.UU. y América Latina. Inspirado por el imperativo de E.F. Schumacher small is beautiful, desarrolló tesis que denominó «economía descalza» y «economía a escala humana», cuyos criterios definió ya en los años 80 en una matriz que abarca diez necesidades humanas básicas. En los años 90 formuló con la hipótesis del «umbral» la idea de que a partir de determinado punto del desarrollo económico, la calidad de vida comienza a disminuir.

<p>Sachant que l'écran d'un iPad est plus mauvais pour reproduire les caractères japonais que celui des liseuses de 2004, je doute que le critère "reproducing Japanese characters" soit très pertinant.</p>
