In the early 1920s, Masataka Taketsuru came to Scotland from Japan to learn how to distil whisky. While in Scotland he married Rita Cowan, of Kirkintilloch, who left Scotland with him to live in Japan for forty years, never to return home. She died in 1961. This is an illustrated story of one man's determination to succeed, both in business and love. It is also the story of a young girl's move to a land far away, of strange customs and even stranger language, her joys and heartaches. It is also the incredible story of how whisky is made to perfection thousands of miles away from its cultural 'home', and the history of its development within Japan up to the present day.

Today we have a cocaine problem in our country. This problem is no newcomer to the American scene. At the turn of the century, coca was added to many over-the-counter products. It was widely advertised and freely available at the local drug store. Indeed there were groups who warned of its effects and fought against its use but the population at large with easy access and probably little understanding continued using the these tonics and stimulants often to the point of addiction. At least some of the time the public was not aware of the addition of cocaine as one of the ingredients. Of all the coca products none was more flagrant in their advertising or more successful in their sales than Coca Mariani, a dangerous combination of wine and coca extract. The "Popular French Tonic," as it was called was billed as a "Tonic Stimulant" and they claim was used in Hospitals, Public and Religious Institutions.

À la fin du XIXe siècle, les produits à base de coca, comme le vin Mariani vanté sur cette affiche de 1877, étaient en vogue. Boissons ou produits de beauté louaient ainsi les propriétés stimulantes et toniques de la plante sacrée des Incas. Au XXe siècle, en raison de la production croissante de cocaïne, toute utilisation de la coca à des fins commerciales fut totalement prohibée.

Nel 1863 il chimico Angelo Mariani inventò in Corsica il Vin Mariani, un miscuglio di vino e coca: Mariani sperimentò il suo ricostituente su un'attrice depressa e i risultati furono spettacolari. Sospinto inoltre dalle voci che gli attribuivano proprietà afrodisiache, il Vin Mariani diventò in breve così popolare da far sorgere numerose imitazioni, dal vino alla coca Maltine al Metcalf. Molti e famosi furono all'epoca gli estimatori del Vin Mariani: scrittori come Verne, Dumas, Conan Doyle, Stevenson, sovrani come lo Scià di Persia e la Regina Vittoria, pontefici come Leone XIII, che addirittura premiò Angelo Mariani con una medaglia d'oro.
