Identity Production in a Networked Culture: Why Youth Heart MySpace

by bcpbcp & 6 others (via)
I want to talk with you today about how teenagers are using a website called MySpace.com. I will briefly describe the site and then discuss how youth use it for identity production and socialization in contemporary American society. I have been following MySpace since its launch in 2003. Initially, it was the home to 20-somethings interested in indie music in Los Angeles. Today, you will be hard pressed to find an American teenager who does not know about the site, regardless of whether or not they participate. Over 50 million accounts have been created and the majority of participants are what would be labeled youth - ages 14-24. MySpace has more pageviews per day than any site on the web except Yahoo! (yes, more than Google or MSN).

Making An RSS Feed

by parnold50 & 3 others (via)
RSS is a method of distributing links to content in your web site that you'd like others to use. In other words, it's a mechanism to "syndicate" your content. To understand syndication, consider the "real world" situation where artist Scott Adams draws a daily Dilbert cartoon. The cartoon is made available to any newspaper that cares to run it, in exchange for a fee -- and 2,000 papers in 65 countries do so. Unlike Scott Adams, syndication of web content via RSS is unlikely to make you rich. However, it can be an easy way to draw attention to your material, bringing you some traffic and perhaps a little net fame, depending on how good your information is.

The 'box hack' has been removed from the templates in the last round of changes which means the 'pixel-perfect' templates are not 'pixel-perfect' in IE5xPC. Future versions may include the box-hack again.

15 Seconds : A Step-by-Step Guide To Using MySQL with ASP.NET - Part 1

by bcpbcp
Back in the days of classic ASP, if you were building a database-driven web site, your choice was either to invest a lot of money to get a copy of Microsoft SQL Server (or some other enterprise-ready database) or invest a lot of time finding a way to deal with the performance and scalability limitations of Microsoft Access. Luckily these days there's another viable alternative: MySQL.

Yahoo! 360° - Computer Mediated Communication - The Robin Hood of Neopets [circa 2000]

by bcpbcp
Possibly the most popular site for children on the web today is Neopets. If you have a sibling, niece, nephew, or grandchild that is connected to the net, you can just ask them and they’ll tell you ALL about this site, which built on success the Tamagotchi craze at the end of the 1990s: You adopt one or more virtual pets, collect objects for them, feed them, play with them, and try to help them advance and grow in several ways.

:: Último Segundo - Municípios com mais de 500 mil habitantes têm site

by bcpbcp
