Sysinternals Freeware - Autoruns

by 9 others (via)
This utility, which has the most comprehensive knowledge of auto-starting locations of any startup monitor (A starting list of auto-run locations was obtained from David Solomon's "Windows Internals" seminar), shows you what programs are configured to run during system bootup or login, and shows you the entries in the order Windows processes them. These programs include ones in your startup folder, Run, RunOnce, and other Registry keys. You can configure Autoruns to show other locations, including Explorer shell extensions, toolbars, browser helper objects, Winlogon notifications, auto-start services, and much more. Autoruns goes way beyond the MSConfig utility bundled with Windows Me and XP. Autoruns' Hide Signed Microsoft Entries option helps you to zoom in on third-party auto-starting images that have been added to your system and it has support for looking at the auto-starting images configured for other accounts configured on a system. Also included in the download package is a command-line equivalent that can output in CSV format, Autorunsc. You'll probably be surprised at how many executables are launched automatically!

This is an adaptation of In The News, a project that heat-mapped Google News mind-share from Spring 2004 through Summer 2005. I have stopped collecting information from Google News, and started looking at the Del.icio.us Popular list of highly-linked websites. (why?) The stripes you see at top are a near-realtime cumulative view of popular sites posted to the Del.icio.us social bookmarking service (if you don't see green and red stripes, you need Flash), organized by date and popularity.

How to Install Hard Drives over 8 GB in Older PCs | Hardware Secrets

(via)
In older PCs BIOS doesn't support hard drives over 8 GB even though the hard drive is correctly recognized on setup. So, it will be correctly recognized on setup but when you format it, it will only format as 8 GB. This problem is caused by a BIOS limitation, similar to the famous 504 MB limit that existed many years ago.

For example, with the Firefox browser, I have found a noticable increase in browsing speed when compared to the official Firefox builds, as evidenced by this analysis. The builds I release are "Community Edition" builds and thus are not officially supported by the Mozilla Foundation. Please read this disclaimer for a full explaination.
