This January, we teamed up with Dick's Sporting Goods to launch Gear in Action, a digital lookbook featuring products for the 2014 Baseball season. As you can see on this page of the finished site, video of the products in action displays at full height and width. This occurs regardless of browser size, and without distorting the video's original aspect ratio.

WebVTT is associated with subtitling HTML5 video, but the spec contains many additional features that aren’t related to dialogue. One of the most useful of these is the ability to read and link to video cue points. Creating WebVTT chapter tracks deepens viewer’s engagement with more informative content, while adding invaluable accessibility and UI features. Best of all, they’re easy to create.

The UK’s Open University has become a dependable source of very short, online video introductions to all sorts of things, from weighty subjects like religion, economics, and literary theory to lighter, but no less interesting fare like the art and science of bike design. With breezy tone and serious intent, their animated “60-Second Adventures” make seemingly arcane academic ideas accessible to laypeople with no prior background. Now they’ve teamed up with writer and BBC broadcaster Melvyn Bragg of In Our Time fame for a series of video shorts that run just a little over 60 seconds each, with animations by Andrew Park of Cogni+ive, and narration by comedic actor Harry Shearer from Spinal Tap, The Simpsons, and, most recently, Nixon’s the One.

Berkenstock describes his work at EmTech 2011: Cheaper satellite pictures. Skybox Imaging Dan Berkenstock, cofounder and chief product officer of Skybox Imaging, wants to let "anyone know what's happening anywhere in the world at any time." Next year the company plans to launch the first of what it hopes will be a constellation of 12 to 24 satellites taking high-­resolution pictures of Earth. Each satellite should cost about a tenth as much as the $250 million to $500 million imaging satellites operated by companies like DigitalGlobe and GeoEye.
