Using Canvas To Turn Image Into Grayscale

by 1 other
HTML 5 introduces Canvas object which can be used to draw and manipulate images. In this example, I used a Canvas to turn an image into grayscale. If your browser supports Canvas, you should see two images above: the normal image and the grayscale one. The grayscale one is not a separate image, it is generated by utilizing Canvas.

by 2 others

Exploring Cufón, a sIFR alternative for font embedding ~ Authentic Boredom

by 1 other (via)
Thanks to a tweet from Jason Santa Maria a few weeks ago (and his help since), I was pointed to Cufón, which “aims to become a worthy alternative to sIFR, which despite its merits still remains painfully tricky to set up and use.” I’ll refer to these tests again in a minute, but feel free to jump ahead to these Cufón test pages that I’ve put together.

About - cufon - GitHub

Cufón aims to become a worthy alternative to sIFR, which despite its merits still remains painfully tricky to set up and use. To achieve this ambitious goal the following requirements were set: 1. No plug-ins required – it can only use features natively supported by the client 2. Compatibility – it has to work on every major browser on the market 3. Ease of use – no or near-zero configuration needed for standard use cases 4. Speed – it has to be fast, even for sufficiently large amounts of text And now, after nearly a year of planning and research we believe that these requirements have been met.

typeface.js -- Rendering text with Javascript, <canvas>, and VML

by 12 others
Instead of creating images or using flash just to show your site's graphic text in the font you want, you can use typeface.js and write in plain HTML and CSS, just as if your visitors had the font installed locally. This is a work in progress, but functional enough at least to render the the graphic text on this site.

Wait till I come! » Blog Archive » Video captioning made easy with the YouTube JavaScript API

(via)
One thing that has been annoying me for ages is that no video player on the web allows you to write comments for a specific time in the video that get displayed as plain text. Viddler allows you to comment at a certain time and it appears in the video, but the benefits of time based captioning both in terms of accessibility and SEO didn’t quite transpire to any video site maintainers yet. Edit: Darn, I hadn’t looked at Viddler for a long time, it actually does this now, well done!

Extending The API To Create Labeled Markers at Beginning Google Maps Applications

Many people find the object-oriented aspect of JavaScript to be very confusing. Fortunately, the designers of the Google Maps API have managed to make it extremely accessible—if all you ever did was instantiate their classes and then build scripts around those objects, you could still create very interesting and compelling maps. Creating a cool map is firstly about content, and secondly about technology.

75 (Really) Useful JavaScript Techniques | Developer's Toolbox | Smashing Magazine

by 13 others
Developers and designers are using more and more JavaScript in modern designs. Sometimes this can be a hindrance to the user and take away from the simplicity of the design, and other times it can add greatly to the user’s experience. The key is a) adding the right amount of JavaScript, and b) using the right JavaScript techniques. We have already collected various JavaScript techniques in the past – now it’s time for a new portion of JavaScript.

Aza’s Thoughts » Vote! How to Detect the Social Sites Your Visitors Use

by 5 others
How does SocialHistory.js know? By using a cute information leak introduced by CSS. The browser colors visited links differently than non-visited links. All you have to do is load up a whole bunch of URLs for the most popular social bookmarking sites in an iframe and see which of those links are purple and which are blue. It’s not perfect (which, from a privacy perspective, is at least a little comforting) but it does get you 80% of the way there. The best/worst part is that this information leak probably won’t be plugged because it’s a fundamental feature of the browser.

unFocus Projects » History Keeper

by 1 other
unFocus History Keeper is a JavaScript based library for managing browser history (back button) and providing support for deep linking for Flash and Ajax applications. Demos, examples, and sightings in the wild, coming soon. In the mean time, you can check out the example page in SVN or check out adcSTUDO for a demo. The test page contains a small silly JavaScript application that takes what you put in a confirmation box, and makes a history entry out of it.

The AutoSuggest class adds a pulldown menu of suggested values to a text field. The user can either click directly on a suggestion to enter it into the field, or navigate the list using the up and down arrow keys, selecting a value using the enter key. The values for the suggestion list are to provided as XML, or as JSON (by a PHP script, or similar).

sIFR Tutorial: Use Your Own Fonts

Even though sIFR has been around for a couple years, many web designers have still never heard of it, let alone use it. sIFR (or Scalable Inman Flash Replacement) allows you to use custom typography on your site by utilizing JavaScript, Flash, and CSS. While most people simply create images when they need a custom-type title, sIFR can dynamically create short text blocks using whatever font you want (while still rendering the text with a default font on non-Flash browsers).

Novemberborn: sIFR 3: Updates

Life’s busy as usual, but it’s been too long since I last wrote about sIFR. Using the wonders of modern technology I’ve been writing and posting this from a train speeding towards Rotterdam, where I’ll be dropping by at the Xopus booth at ECM Plaza. Afterwards I’ll be going to a place-supposedly-unknown on a company holiday with Q42 and Xopus. (How cool is that, eh?! We’re hiring, too) So anyway, that’s just to tell you that I won’t be responding to questions in the next few days.
