by 1 other

VC&G | 50 Vintage Web Ad Banners

While browsing through my file archives some years ago, I ran across a few folders of locally cached web pages. Browsers like Netscape and Internet Explorer saved these files in order to speed up load times upon future visits to the same sites. Browsers today do the same thing, but the functionality was far more vital in the days of sluggish dial-up modem connections.

News from The Associated Press

HAVANA (AP) -- Cut off from the Internet, young Cubans have quietly linked thousands of computers into a hidden network that stretches miles across Havana, letting them chat with friends, play games and download hit movies in a mini-replica of the online world that most can't access.

This Guy Tried To Group Text 32 Tinder Matches And Failed Miserably (Photos)

Either this dude has no idea how group messages on iPhones work or he genuinely didn’t care that 32 of his Tinder girls were going to see that he sent the same message to each of them. For his sake, I hope it’s the first one. “Joshua” must have been incredibly lazy that day because it appears he sent a mass text to every female he right-swiped. I mean, maybe he was just bored and looking for some innocent companionship, but — no, I really can’t justify this guy if I tried. This is just weird.

Web browsing is copyright infringement, publishers argue | Ars Technica

"Despite the ruling, one cannot overstate how irrational this case was to begin with. It’s hard to believe the question at stake was whether browsing the Internet is legal or not," said Jakob Kucharczyk, the Brussels director for the Computer & Communications Industry Association.

Can the internet make TV less boring? | The Verge

(via)
On a warm night in New York last week, advertisers and content producers huddled together into a huge white tent beside the Metropolitan Opera House to watch Yahoo unveil its first TV-length original web series. Purple lights and plastic champagne flutes were everywhere, and everyone in attendance seemed to know that Yahoo's event on Monday, along with about a dozen others that would occur that week, was part of the start of something huge. Yahoo was there to cap off the first night of the annual NewFronts, a series of casually linked events where new media companies attempt to woo advertisers and producers with their platforms and shows — and critically, do so just weeks before traditional TV networks host similar events of their own.

Web design as troll: how The Verge Fanboys piece taunted the internet | Vox Product Blog

How do you speak to a group of extremely passionate people? What kind of design would speak to them? When Joshua Topolsky approached us about creating three different layouts in the style of three mobile UI’s we were initially torn. Something about mimicking the UI of phones didn’t feel original. But more importantly, it presented a problem of presentation. There was an inherent a UX problem to solve: do you offer presentation options or do you trick the user? We decided to troll.

The Heartbleed Hit List: The Passwords You Need to Change Right Now

An encryption flaw called the Heartbleed bug is already being called one of the biggest security threats the Internet has ever seen. The bug has affected many popular websites and services — ones you might use every day, like Gmail and Facebook — and could have quietly exposed your sensitive account information (such as passwords and credit card numbers) over the past two years.
