Comme de tradition dans « Place de la toile », quand il y a un stagiaire, il ou elle a charge de la préparation d’une émission, et avant tout du choix d’un sujet. Alexandre Jubelin est avec nous depuis début septembre, et son choix a penché vers la photo. Nous allons donc nous demander si le numérique change quelque chose à la manière dont on prend des photos, dans des termes techniques ou esthétiques, et puis s’il change les raisons pour lesquelles on prend des photos.

You play by starting a photo challenge – you can write your own, or select from currently available gems along the lines of “animal you most look like” or “something you shouldn’t drink” or “best Spiderman”. You share that “bout” with your friends, who then presumably rise to the challenge and take a photo that best/most awesomely represents that statement. 

Bout, a social photo-taking game for iOS, was built in collaboration with leading comedy site CollegeHumor. Bout pits players’ skills and cleverness against their friends’ for the chance to win in-game coins and earn bragging rights. Players race to submit the most creative pictures in response to fun prompts, resulting in an endless stream of amazing, funny photos.

In POV #97, Sergeo Kirby asked a series of needed questions about the landscape of interactive documentary. (Read Kirby’s article here.) Unfortunately, it felt like many of the answers he provided were reached before he started writing the article. Sergeo is a friend whose innovations have contributed some great things to Canadian doc culture, but that article can’t skate by without a rebuttal.

There were a surprising number of games throughout the past few decades that featured friendly shutterbugs, so we made the tough decision to choose our 10 favourites.

Photography has had a relatively quiet but constant presence in video games over the last two decades, usually featured in video game titles as a mini-game or bonus mode. A few incorporate photography into the main storyline.

If you are anything like me, you had friends who linked Rainer’s “The Art of in-game Photography.” If you are anything like me, you saw many of your friends duke it out on Facebook and Twitter over whether or not this was a legitimate art — whether it was even photography.

There’s a small but vibrant cottage industry of Muslim women writing romance novels, littattafan soyayya, in Northern Nigeria, a region best known for the acts of terrorist group Boko Haram. The writers face off with Islamic censors, and they sell their books in some of the same markets targeted by Boko Haram suicide bombers.  The books are about love and marriage. Some are subversive and speak out against human trafficking and child marriage, while others are submissive, advising women on how best to please their husbands, offering fantasies of escape, and tales of the poor girl marrying the rich man.   Guided by the themes of these novels, “Diagram of the Heart” explores romance, tradition, love and loss in the lives of women in Northern Nigeria.    "Diagram of the Heart" will be released as a photo book on February 11, 2016, published by Red Hook Editions. Inspired by a Roy Lichtenstein original at the Walker Art Center, I decided to design the whaam! map. In his early career, Lichtenstein worked as a comic book artist which inspired his later work. I kept my whaam! style limited to four stylistic mainstays:

Swiss maps have long been praised for their accuracy, quality, and beauty. Since 1938 the Swisstopo – Swiss Federal Office of Topography, has been producing maps for hikers, Alpinists, cyclists, planners, tourists, and explorers. I decided to design a ski map with such attention to detail using Mapbox Studio and the Mapbox Streets and Mapbox Terrain tilesets.

San Francisco was the first publicly released, Apple-designed typeface in over 20 years. Its name is familiar, harking back to the previous convention of naming typefaces after “world class cities” like Chicago, Geneva, Athens. London, Venice, and yes, San Francisco.

A simple library that provides standard Unicode emoji support across all platforms.

This project consists of the following bits and pieces: * A proposed specification to add support for embedded color image glyphs in OpenType fonts, * A tool called emoji_builder.py, to embed a set of PNG images into an existing font, * Two sets of sample PNG images for ASCII characters and sample scripts to build them into test fonts: FruityGirl and Funkster. * Scripts to build a real color emoji font out of the Open Source PhantomOpenEmoji images.

Multicolor fonts are those that have full chromatic capabilities built in. Rather than using CSS, OpenType, or a layering of fonts to achieve the effect they embed color bitmaps or vector shapes.

This is an experiment in using the web audio API together with canvas to make some interesting and cool-looking visualizations. Since this is my first foray into the world of both canvas and web audio, I have slowly iterated over a number of ideas and trials which are all in the /tests folder.

The infosphere* relies on an intricate network of signals, wired and wireless, that support it. We are completely surrounded by an invisible system of data cables and radio signals from access points, cell towers and overhead satellites. Our digital lives depend on these very physical systems for communication, observation and navigation.

Since the beginning of cinema, film and video have been composed with a fixed frame — theatrical films are now often presented at 1.85:1, while television is broadcast at 16:9 for high-definition or 4:3 for standard definition. But today, video is likely to be seen on device with unusual aspect ratios or multiple aspect ratios when rotated or resized — some Android tablets are 8:5 (or 5:8), the iPhone is 3:2 (or 2:3), and desktop browser windows can be of any dimension.

In November 2015, a video was released to the public showing 17-year-old Laquan McDonald— a black kid who went to school in Chicago’s South Side—being shot 16 times in less than 15 seconds by Jason Van Dyke, a white officer with the Chicago Police Department. Protests erupted around the country, and to this day, protests continue in Chicago. Not only was this an example of an officer brazenly ignoring protocol and killing another human being with wanton disregard for the law, it was also evidence of an apparent cover-up: McDonald was killed in October 2014, and it took at least one lawsuit and 13 months for the city to hand over the video—seemingly an inherently public record—to journalists and lawyers working the case.
