Talking to Riita and Karoline, the duo behind the project, we get to know in greater depth what is happening behind the preparation of each project and understand better how they manage to produce these beautiful pieces of work.

Grant Thompson of the King of Random just shared a great tutorial on how to make completely edible gummy LEGO bricks and figures using a mixture of corn syrup, Jello, and gelatin. Using the right molds, the pieces are so precise you can actually build with them. Unlike the chocolate LEGO bricks we featured a few months ago, these look somewhat simple to make. Up until now, there were exactly zero rhubarb recipe gracing the pages of this blog. Zero, in the nearly eight (!!!) years I’ve been chattering on about food and drink. I didn’t grow up eating rhubarb so I was never familiar with it. I had some vague idea that it was sour and is supposed to go well with strawberries but that’s pretty much the extent of my knowledge on the topic. Last week, Andrew and I had a special date night out and we went to a wonderful local restaurant Plow & Anchor. The whole meal was truly superb, but the dessert was especially outstanding. As per my usual M.O., I ordered the most interesting sounding thing, which happened to be sweet pea creme brûlée with rhubarb compote. Every bite of it was phenomenal, including the rhubarb compote. Clearly, it is time to expand my rhubarb horizons.

I first emailed Dave in 2010. My query probably sounded like a lot of comments he gets – something to the effect of, “I want your life. I want to be you. Can I come to Japan and meet you?” Surprisingly, Dave got back to me very quickly. He was courteous, despite my stalker-ish professions of hero worship. He even called me on the phone one day, and listened to my aspirations as an artist. We threw some collaborative ideas around, but nothing really materialized from that first contact.

‘Reading between the lines’ is a project by the duo Gijs Van Vaerenbergh, a collaboration between young Belgian architects Pieterjan Gijs (Leuven, 1983) and Arnout Van Vaerenbergh (Leuven, 1983). Since 2007, they have been realizing projects in public space together that start from their architectural background, but have an artistic intention. Their projects do not always originate out of the initiative of a classical client, for example, and carry a large degree of autonomy. Their primary concerns are experiment, reflection, a physical involvement with the end result and the input of the viewer.

We’re building a new data processing pipeline for analyzing GPS probe data streams. This infrastructure will let us improve the map in new ways and at huge scale. Here’s the first look at how it works. Streaming GPS tracks are overlaid against our streets data, allowing us to identify where there is activity, like people running or driving, but no trail or road data in our map. When we find a place like this, we queue it up for our data team to look at in to-fix, our open source micro-tasking tool. Once we verify that a path or street is missing, we add it to OpenStreetMap and our map is updated in under 10 minutes.

This is an update to my Photoshop action that streamlines the process of exporting images for the web and iOS.

This post looks at a way to add a subtle noise effect to HTML elements using CSS. Using this technique is of interest because it doesn’t require use of an image editor, weighs in at just a little over 2K and doesn’t generate any extra HTTP requests.

At present it contains 1,024,640 volumes.
